Oppo BDP-80 review: Oppo BDP-80

Oppo BDP-80

Excellent image quality on Blu-ray movies; plays music, videos, and pictures off a connected USB drive; solid build quality; SACD and DVD-Audio playback; 7.1 analog outputs; swift operational speed.

No streaming media services like Netflix; lacks built-in Wi-Fi; does not support 3D Blu-ray; bare-bones user interface; DVD performance lags slightly behind competing players; relatively expensive for its feature set.

Oppo's BDP-80 Blu-ray player doesn't perform well enough to make up for its lack of Wi-Fi, streaming media features, and 3D Blu-ray support.

Oppo BDP-80 Universal Blu-ray Player First Look

The BDP-80 is the new universal player from Oppo. That means that not only does it play Blu-rays and DVDs but also SACDs and DVD-As. With just a few corners cut, the BDP-80 comes in at only $289.

Oppo BDP-80 Blu-ray Player Reviewed

Oppo Digital has released a lower-priced alternative to its acclaimed BDP-83 and BDP-83SE. The BDP-80 ($289) is a universal disc player that supports the Blu-ray, SACD, DVD-Audio, and HDCD formats. It lacks a streaming video-on-demand service like...

Oppo BDP-80 – affordable universal disc player

$500 priced the Oppo BDP-83 is one of the best performing Blu-ray disc players in the market. Now, the company has released – the Oppo BDP-80 that costs $290 with quite similar functionality of the BDP-83. However, it lacks inbuilt Wi-Fi and media...

Swift operational speed; 7.1 analog outputs; DVD-Audio and SACD playback; solid build; plays back pictures, videos, and music tracks via connected USB external drive; excellent picture quality for Blu-ray movies

Relatively expensive; slow DVD performance; very basic user interface; no 3D playback support; lacks inbuilt Wi-Fi and streaming media services

If you need a basic Blu-ray player with excellent image quality, then the Oppo BDP-80 is a good choice. However, its competitors are providing more features in similar price range like Wi-Fi and streaming media services such as Panasonic DMP-BD85K and...

Oppo has injected a lot of experience and engineering from the BDP-83 to the BDP-80. The build quality as well as video and audio performance are streets ahead of players at this price point. For $289, the BDP-80 is ridiculous. If you are looking for a...

Oppo Digital BDP-80 Universal Disc Player

Oppo's Blu-ray players have received the accolade of being used as the internal guts of high-price players from high-end brands. Does this new lower-cost unit keep up the performance heights?

Able to change performance parameters and resolution on-the-fly ; SACD and DVD Audio support ; Multi-region

No force film deinterlacing mode ; No seamless layer change for DVDs

If you have a display with top-class deinterlacing, or perhaps a recent AV receiver with similar (they will need manual film/video overrides to significantly improve performance), then you will find the Oppo Digital BDP-80 excellent. Especially if you...
