Canon MV960

The sub $1000 camcorder market is still primarily the domain of Mini DV tapes. While a few manufacturers have managed to bring out well priced DVD vid...

Slim frame, good quality video, big zoom, increased battery capacity

Computer kit only transfers images, light not powerful enough, still pictures of poor quality

Good video quality with a price premium over similar Canon models for greater battery capacity and analogue inputs.

Canon ZR700 review

Canon ZR700

Wide-screen LCD; excellent color quality in outdoor settings; easy-to-use controls; built-in lens cover; supports analog-to-digital conversions; plenty of manual controls; accepts add-on lenses and filters; low price.

No accessory shoe or microphone input; bottom-loading tape compartment; grainy, low-resolution still photos; not enough stabilization at maximum zoom; poor low-light performance.

Canon's latest entry-level camcorder, the ZR700, is easy to use, affordable, and ideal for wide-screen moviemaking, but low-light performance remains a problem.

Canon MV960

Canon's latest entry-level camcorder is easy to use, affordable, and ideal for wide-screen moviemaking, but low-light performance remains a problem.

Wide-screen LCD ; Excellent colour quality in outdoor settings ; Easy-to-use controls ; Built-in lens cover ; Supports analog-to-digital conversions ; Plenty of manual controls ; Accepts add-on lenses and filters ; Low price

No accessory shoe or microphone input ; Bottom-loading tape compartment ; Grainy, low-resolution still photos ; Not enough stabilisation at maximum zoom ; Poor low-light performance

These complaints aside, most home moviemakers will find the Canon MV960's video quality perfectly acceptable. And price-conscious shoppers are sure to love its many features and small size.

Canon ZR700 Camcorder Review

The Canon ZR700 tops off the ZR series this year, which has undergone serious cosmetic changes, including a new joystick control. How does the ZR700 hope to distinguish itself? The differences from next step-down, the ZR600, are small but crucial,...

Product Specifications

Ready for high resolution 16: 9 recording, the MV950 records stunning panoramic pictures in widescreen. With a color viewfinder and 2.7" wide color LCD screen, footage that's shot can be monitored exactly as it will appear on a widescreen TV. The LCD features a convenient level marker, helping to keep the horizon line level, and a single button to switch between 16: 9 and 4: 3 modes. With an Electronic Image Stabilizer and variable zoom speeds, the 25x Canon lens is constructed to the highest optical standards. As well as recording great looking video, the MV950 allows you to capture digital photos to SD card. Dedicated still shooting features include Canon's 9-point Artificial Intelligent Auto-focus (AiAF), letting you choose what area of the image displayed on the LCD screen you want to keep in focus. With a Night Mode LED, even the darkest conditions won't prevent you from recording the moment to video tape. Canon's DIGIC DV imaging processor provides dual processing paths, one each for video and photos. Ensuring that colors are always vivid and bright, whether you're watching video on a TV or printing out onto photo paper, DIGIC DV also allows a photograph to be shot at the same time as video is being recorded. While the camcorder's one-push Easy Shooting mode sets all the most important controls to automatic, letting even beginners start recording straight away, it's easy to learn how to take more control thanks to the MV950's intuitive six button control layout. An extra wireless controller is also supplied. At just 380g and finished off in silver metallic, the MV950's new design improves balance and handling during shooting.
