JVC Everio GZ-MG300 review

With long recording times and convenient operation, hard-disk-based camcorders are quite tempting, especially when coupled with the relatively low prices for standard-definition models. That's true of the lowest-end camcorders in JVC's veteran Everio G...

Attractive price; compact design; holds hours of video.

No eye-level viewfinder, mic input, or headphone jack; persistent video compression artifacts.

The near-identical models of the JVC Everio GZ-MG300 series--the MG330, MG335, MG360 and MG365--are budget-priced, hard-drive-based camcorders that are nice enough, but produce typical low-budget video.

JVC Everio GZ-MG30U

Until this image quality gets better and the price comes down, leave the hard-drive camcorders for the early adopters.

Great size. Very usable menu system.

Too expensive given its mediocre video quality. Compatibility issues with video-editing tools.

Image quality

JVC Everio GZ-MG30U

Stores tons of video; excellent zoom reach; very small.

Terrible battery life; mediocre video quality; grainy low-light footage; requires a computer or stand-alone DVD burner.

Though the short battery life and mediocre image quality are frustrating, the JVC Everio GZ-MG30U's amazing recording capacity and tiny size still make it an enticing device.

Though the short battery life and mediocre image quality are frustrating, the JVC Everio GZ-MG30's amazing recording capacity and tiny size still make it an enticing device.

Stores tons of video ; Excellent zoom reach ; Very small

Terrible battery life ; Mediocre video quality ; Grainy low-light footage ; Requires a computer or stand-alone DVD burner

Still-image quality is terrible. The VGA resolution images lack detail and are grainy no matter what the lighting conditions.

If I were to compile a list of man's greatest follies (the Top 10, or so) there would surely be a large bag from which to choose. Who knows? Maybe the GZ-MG30 wouldn't even make the list. But trust me, this camcorder is somewhere in that bag. You'll do...
