Panasonic HDC-HS9 Camcorder

It's the SD9's chunkier sibling, but does that make it better?

Panasonic HDC-HS9 review

Here's a £700 HD cam that manages to cram two formats into its modest frame

Great pictures ; Compact yet robust build ; Plenty of features

A bit heavy ; Awkward positioning of joystick ; Mini HDMI not included

A few minor niggles aside, this is a very competent camera with some nice features to boot

SimplyDV Review: Panasonic HDC-HS9 3CCD AVCHD Camcorder

We review a 3CCD AVCHD "Hybrid" camcorder that records 1920x1080 25P Cinema Mode video with 5.1 Surround Sound to SDHC memory cards in addition to 60GB Hard Disc Drive!

The HDC-SD9 is a great camcorder for those looking for a starter camcorder that is capable of shooting and playing back high definition video designed to look and sound great on large-format flat-panel TV displays when connected digitally, and in that...

Expert Review

The HDC-HS9 is arguably the best high-definition camcorder in its price range; with the possible exception of its stablemate; the HDC-SD9. For our money, the HDC-HS9 comes out slightly on top due to its 60GB hard drive. Highly recommended.

60GB of inbuilt memory, lightweight design, stunning 'full HD' video resolution, solid still images mode

No 3.5mm microphone or headphone jacks, directional stick requires two-handed operation, occasional noise issues

Panasonic HDC-HS9 Review

Panasonic's quality doesn't compare to the other models out there.

Panasonic HDC-HS9

Three years ago, the Panasonic HDC-HS9 would have been revolutionary, and its image-quality-to-price ratio would have impelled users to look past its limitations. Today, the camcorder is an also-ran on our comparison chart. Its most impressive features...

Compact size ; Affordable price

Disappointing image quality ; Poor low-light footage

This AVCHD camcorder’s lackluster performance is only partially offset by a low price.

Panasonic HDC-HS900

3D-capable (with add-on lens). Excellent video quality. Records at 1080/50p. Touchscreen controls actually work.

Doesn't seem to like OS X Lion much. SD card slot can all too easily sit outside the camera body. 3D is an add-on; you'll have to carry the lens with you to make it happen.

Panasonic's 3D-capable 3MOS camcorder offers an impressive array of features and top-quality shooting, but it's not a light model to carry around, especially with the optional 3D lens bolted on.

Panasonic HDC-HS9

This year's high-def hybrid camcorder from Panasonic is of the much more useful SD card/hard-disk variety. There's 60GB of on-board storage and 1080p recording at 25fps.

Ample hard-disk room for high-def footage. Records video to SD/SDHC cards. Smallish size.

Colours oversaturated. Feature poor. Inconvenient joystick location.

Unless you can find a killer deal, the HS9 comes up short both in features and image quality zing.

Panasonic HDC-HS9 Camcorder Review

The Panasonic HDC-HS9 ($1,099 MSRP) is another of the manufacturer's third-generation AVCHD camcorders. Nearly identical to the HDC-SD9, the HS9 adds a 60GB hard disk drive (HDD) and a hefty $300 price hike. It's a sleek, compact design that feels good...

The bottom line is there's just nothing exciting about this camcorder. Unless Panasonic gets its act together soon, the future of its camcorder dynasty could be up a creek without a paddle. Now is the time to dust off those old MiniDV blueprints from...
