Panasonic NV-GS400

Weighing less than 700g, the Panasonic NV-GS400 is the first consumer camcorder with 3 CCDs - 1 MegaPixel each - that achieves an amazing 16:9 picture quality, especially by utilizing the whole video frame, combined with the Pro Cinema mode, with progress

Panasonic NV-GS400B test and review

Panasonic's NV-GS400B looks to be an appealing package, but is it good enough to steal the Sony DCR-TRV950's mantle as the best low-cost, semi-pro three-chip camcorder?

Although the NV-GS400B isn't as aggressively priced as its stable mates, and costs more than Sony's HC1000, it delivers a lot for the money. The range of manual features is impressive even compared to Canon's XM2, and you'd have to push towards £2,000...

SimplyDV Review: Panasonic NV-GS400 DV Camcorder

Superb pictures, great handling, good optical zoom, lots of manual functionality and a nice big LCD screen that you can see!

Upward-facing mic, 600x digital zoom superfluous

It's a great camcorder for the more serious user looking for excellent 3CCD pictures, manual functionality and - let's be honest - a bigger camcorder that has big buttons and stability

Panasonic NV-GS400

The Panasonic NV-GS400 offers outstanding value in a camcorder for the discriminating consumer.

Smart design and excellent manual controls ; Great three-chip imagery and 16:9 performance ; Solid optical zoom and stabiliser ; Big LCD

Not the smallest camera ; Mediocre low-light and still-image performance ; Not great as a point-and-shoot

Product Specifications

Objects of beauty have a power that goes beyond words and touches the heart. In photography, the challenge is to capture images that convey the same emotional depth. Panasonic meets this challenge with the 3CCD camera system and a host of other advanced imaging technologies that let you capture still pictures with breathtaking 4.0-megapixel resolution. With a Panasonic 3CCD camera, it's easy to capture still or moving pictures that touch the heart. And to any photographer, that's a beautiful thing. 3CCD Camera System The same system that is used in professional broadcast cameras can produce high quality pictures for you. Because the CCD (Charged Couple Device) is a key device for image quality, all professional video cameras use a 3CCD system. In this system, a prism splits the incident light into its three primary colors (red, green and blue) and each resultant color signal is collected by a separate CCD. The 3CCD system reproduces colors with exceptional fidelity and captures even subtle gradations. 4 Megapixel Still Picture Recording Density Pixel Distribution, a technology used in broadcasting, makes it possible to capture still pictures with superb megapixel quality. The tiny 2.5-micron intervals between pixels are shifted by one-half pitch both vertically and horizontally, which distributes them on the CCD with four times the density of previous systems. This lets you capture still pictures with 4-megapixel quality. Leica Dicomar Lens Delivering Leica's superior image rendering. The advanced optical technology that makes Leica Camera AG a legend in the camera world is fully reflected in the 12-element, multi-coated Leica Dicomar lens. This superb lens system eliminates unwanted reflections and reduces the flaring and ghosts that can distort images. It gives sharp definition even to the darker parts of an image, so the entire picture is clear. NEW Crystal Engine: Image Processing LSI The NEW Crystal Engine is a special new image processing circuit for 3CCD camera systems. Processing the signal from each of the three CCD's independently, it gives both moving and still pictures exceptional quality.
