Panasonic SDR-H280

At a time when increasing numbers of consumers are switching their allegiance to high-definition video, the major brands are having to work that bit harder to convince first-time camcorder owners that standard-definition products are a good buy. One...

In all, then, the Panasonic SDR-H280 represents pretty good value for money for those who really don't want the hassle of either tapes or DVD discs

SimplyDV Review: Panasonic SDR-H250 HDD/SDHC Camcorder

Unless you've been living on the moon for the last couple of years you'll know that tape and even DVD is giving way to camcorders that record to hard disc and solid-state media. Panasonic's SDR-H280 offers both.

Ok, let's be realistic. At a point in the evolution of home video when everything is leaning towards high definition very quickly (as witnessed by Panasonic's own offerings), the SDR-H280 isn't a high-def camcorder. It's a standard definition model...

The SDR-H280 is a well-rounded hybrid camcorder that offers high-grade standard-definition video. It might not represent the best value for money when compared to Panasonic's other SD efforts, but it certainly offers the best video quality.

Records to both SD cards and inbuilt 30GB memory, high quality 3CCD sensors

Underperformed in dim lighting, lacks certain selling points found in its cheaper siblings, connectivity is a pain

Image quality, compactness and storage capacity.

Battery life could be better and an old fashioned viewfinder would be appreciated.

The video camera is light and very portable. The control can be worked by anyone without using the manual.

Battery is not incorporated into the machine and sticks out a bit but isn't a problem not have a viewer.

Instructions are easy to follow. Pictures are good and the snapshot facility is an excellent facility(although see comment below).

A small hand may have difficult in grasping the camera and operating the Telephoto and Wide Angle lever and possibly when taking snapshots, reaching the snapshot button.

Very easy to use, the HDD has an awesome size!

Battery life seems short

Panasonic SDR-H280

Brilliantly convenient i.e. being able to switch effortlessly from video (super picture) to stills, which I find very adaquate definition.

Being use to view finders, i.e. pressed against the eye, I find at the moment(need practise) the stability particularly using even modest telephoto tricky.

Product Specifications

The SDR-H280 is a hybrid model that can record on either an SD (or SDHC) memory card or its built-in hard disks. The SDR-H280 features a hard disk that holds up to 27 hours of recording in LP mode. This enhanced-image-quality model also features the 3CCD camera system commonly used in professional broadcast equipment, as well as Panasonic's renowned Optical Image Stabilizer, and a Leica Dicomar lens. Panasonic's professional 3CCD video cameras have brought breathtaking images to viewers around the world since 1992, when they were first selected as the broadcast equipment for the Olympic Games. Panasonic has downsized its professional 3CCD camera system for use in the H280. In a 3CCD camera system, the light received through the lens is split into its three primary color components (red, green and blue), providing more vivid, true-to-life colors, greater detail and richer gradation. It protects data well too, thanks to its exceptional reliability. This is made possible by the super-reliable SD memory card, which does not require any kind of transport mechanism, together with an anti-shock shield that helps protect the built-in hard disk from the effects of external impact. With its extended recording times and rugged design, this model is ideal for shooting lengthy events or for taking on the road. It also offers a function that simplifies the process of copying recordings from the memory card or hard disk to a DVD disc. No PC is required. A DVD disc created this way can be easily played on DVD players.
