Sanyo Xacti HD2

Our favourite HD palm 'corder returns in a new shade, promising better results and sharper pictures

Compact and sexy. Decent outside footage. HDMI port

Still afraid of the dark. Fiddly controls. Camera shake

Our favourite HD palm ‘corder returns in a new shade, promising better results and sharper pictures

The HD2 is still not perfect but it’s by far the smallest and simplest HD camcorder £500 can buy

Sanyo VPC-HD2 review

Affordable and fun,but not worthy of calling itself HD

Light, portable ; Easy to use ; Cheapest HD cam on the market ; 7.1 megapixel digital stills

Difficult to differentiate between SD and HD pictures ; Poor positioning of microphone

Affordable and full of features, but its images fall well short of the quality we'd expect from an HD cam

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 HD video and still camera

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 is the high-definition model in the company's line of "digital media cameras" all of which record video and photos to an SD (secure digital) card.

Considering this Sony Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2's marginal video quality, you might do just as well to spend a lot less less on the similarly pocketable Xacti VPC-CG65 (review here), which records video in standard definition.

Sanyo VPC-HD2 Xacti

Capture HD video, and high-resolution stills, with this budget-priced camcorder. We take a close look at this SD video recording option from Sanyo.

Supremely easy to use, HD video capture, 7.1-megapixel stills capture, healthy number of scene modes, carry case and USB dock bundled, built-in flash, good audio quality, mic socket

MPEG-4 video lacks quality, no accessory shoe, non-integral lens cap, no optical or electronic viewfinder

For the video enthusiast keen to work with high-definition footage, the VPC-HD2 is a great option. The lens is only 10x optical zoom, but go much further and you're looking at having to use a tripod. MPEG-4 capture is highly compressed and there's no...

Hybrid camera and HD camcorder that aims to multi-task, but does it deliver?

Sanyo VPC-HD2

Sanyo might not be one of the marquee names when it comes to digital camcorders but the company has scored some points in recent months with the arrival of a select bunch of high-definition camcorders

Good number of features and quality options, Easy to transfer footage, Decent audio performance

Poor video performance

The positives outweigh the negatives, but when the negatives have to do with basic functionality, that's a problem

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 ($699 as of May 15, 2007) is the high-definition model in the company's line of "digital media cameras," all of which record video and photos to an SD Card. Like the other models in the line, the 7.4-ounce VPC-HD2 is...

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

Although it's still chasing the competition, this tiny HD camcorder offers decent video capturing and still-image capabilities, all in one handy package.

Compact. Good color. Very good digital still images. Very portable.

Video quality could be better. Last year's nice OLED screen not on this year's model. Shutter lag evident in still shots. No optical-image stabilization.
