Sony DCR-IP5

An extremely portable digital camcorder that unfortunately won't work with most digital video editing software.

Sony DCR-IP5 Camcorder Review - Sony MicroMV Camcorders

Sony has decided that supporting two digital consumer formats (MiniDV and Digital8), one more than any other camcorder manufacturer, isn't enough. Sony's latest entries into the camcorder market are the IP series is the MicroMV format. Sony's $1,299...

ip5 fragile sony step child

I bought the ip5 with some disposable income, had a new child i wanted to capture in a nicer format than the 8mm i was using. One thing i didnt gather from the "expert" at best buy or the box was that it uses a sony proprietary format, only useable in ...

Small average digital camera

I have the Sony IP5 camcorder and a bit of experience with it. First, the size is awesome: it really fits your pocket. The price is reasonable, but the overall quality is average.

Ultimate Vacation Camcorder

What makes a perfect vacation camcorder, one that you can EASILY take with you EVERYWHERE. This camcorder fits the bill. It is worth it to pay the extra price for the size because once you use it, there will be times when you look back on your vacation...

Do not buy if you plan on using on a Mac!

I bought this camera after a fair amount of research, but failed to uncover the tidbit that it is TOTALLY incompatable with iMovie/Mac, as well as ANY OTHER editing software on any platform. You can ONLY edit using the included 'Movie Shaker" software...

Small Size, Can Zoom in very close, Cool Effects• Generally easy to use

WILL NOT WORK WITH MACS!!! Noticable compression, Expensive Tapes, Zoom button is pretty touchy

Why Sony? Why?

This camcorder has a tragic flaw: MicroMV. Since I've had this camcorder I've pulled my hair out hunting down ways to get standard video editing programs to recognize the video format that this camcorder uses. I've tried everything from XMuxer to...

A Little Gem!

In my search for a new family video camera the first thing that came to mind was what would it take for me to actually use it instead of it sitting in a bag in the closet? The biggest reason I never used my last Sony (Digital 8) video camera was it's...

Product Specifications

DCR-IP5, the world's smallest handycam, features a revolutionary ultra-compact recording media. Also known as the "Network Handycam IP (Image Portal)", the basic concept for using "IP" is to stand for the new generation, MPEG-2 recording format and PC/network friendly format, which is different from the conventional video camera concept. The DCR-IP5 makes use of an innovative new storage medium to achieve its minute proportions. The MICROMV cassette is barely as large as a postage stamp, with a size that's 70% smaller than a MiniDV cassette. In the search for a new format, Sony selected MPEG-2 compression due to the already widely accepted popularity of DVD players and software. MPEG-2 provides faithful compression of high-quality image data, encouraging the miniaturization of the recording media. Coupled with optical coating technology, Carl Zeiss lenses promise better contrast, color saturation and image brilliance. Only the world's best optical block complements Sony's advanced digital imaging know-how. It reaps this synergy to deliver unsurpassed video and still image quality. The camcorder's sensitive horizontal and vertical motion vector sensors pick up the unwanted jittering caused by an unsteady hand. These shakes are then compensated by the Super SteadyShot system, eliminating unwanted blurs, giving you smoother, more enjoyable video. The DCR-IP5 also has a Multi Picture Search feature.
