Uses MiniDV, has a three CMOS sensor and an electronic image stabilisation system. But is the vertical form a winner?

This 2.8MP Sony offering gives solid stills, but images are not as glorious as you'd expect for the brassy price

Sony Handycam DCR-PC1000

Compact design; three-chip capture; broad feature set; strong photo capabilities; smooth automatic operation.

Clumsy user interface for more advanced functions; pricey; mediocre battery life; works only with proprietary cables and accessories.

Attractive and compact, the Sony Handycam DCR-PC1000 MiniDV camera offers excellent image quality for its class and brings CMOS technology to the world of camcorders. But its overly clever user interface doesn't do its feature set justice.

Sony Handycam DCR-PC1000

A compact three-chip MiniDV camera that combines advanced features with point-and-shoot design.

Compact design ; Three-chip capture ; Broad feature set ; Strong photo capabilities ; Smooth automatic operation

Clumsy user interface for more advanced functions ; Pricey ; Mediocre battery life; works only with proprietary cables and accessories

Although the DCR-PC1000 provides electronic image stabilization instead of an optical system, it effectively eliminated shake without noticeably degrading the image.

This camcorder is at the helm of the entire Sony 2005 line of MiniDV camcorders.  The PC1000 has 3 CMOS chips with 790K gross pixels.  CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) chips are an alternative to CCD chips. As head of the Sony MiniDV...

Sony DCR-PC1000 Camcorder Review - Sony MiniDV Camcorders

Sony's DCR-PC1000 has great potential. It uses three new CMOS sensors, never before seen in a consumer grade camcorder, and they've managed to squeeze some pretty impressive performance out of the first CMOS camcorder. The DCR-PC1000 was theoretically...

The menu system is accessible through the 2.7" color LCD that acts as a touch panel. On the LCD is an additional record start/stop button, zoom controls and a wide select control that swaps the aspect ratio between 16:9 and 4:3. The wider 16:9 mode...

The details in our test footage were also very pleasing to the eye. The CMOS sensors certainly add a more polished look to the overall contrast of the images. We played back the footage a second time without the color from the image to see just how...

DCR-PC1000 FROM SONY

The Sony D C R-PC1000 is the apparent prototype to the design of the S D R-S100. The bodies are almost identical, from the snub-nose look to the built-in lens cap to the wide screen LCD as the sole viewing device. Panasonic has definitely improved on...

Perfect for video artists, excellent, reliable, hi-quality

I'll get straight to the point. There's enough manual controls and settings to get original, white-balanced, well exposed, filmic smooth footage from this very compact camera. I use the custom shutter speed of 25fps to get that film look while...
