Sony Handycam HDR-CX220 review

I don't review as many camcorders as I used to, mostly because of limited bandwidth; cameras require a lot more of my time and there's more reader interest. Occasionally, though, readers express enough interest in a model to pop it onto my review...

The Sony Handycam HDR-CX220 is cheap, small, and lightweight.

Poor video quality and a minimalist set of features disappoint.

The only thing the Sony Handycam HDR-CX220 seems to have going for it is the low price, but "you get what you pay for" has never rung truer.

With the Sony Handycam CX220 camcorder, you get what you pay for

It costs less than $200, but pricing like that is usually comes at a cost.

None.

I can't evaluate this camera because no cable was supplied to charge the battery. I only discovered this after taking the camera to Burma.

Sony HDR-CX220

Very simple to use and get started with although I didn't try much other than taking point and shoot videos. Very light. Leica lens ought to be pretty good but I don't have a direct comparison with anything else.Bought it, used it for a couple of days...

Feels slightly flimsy. Wondered how well made it really is - the price probably reflects a lot of low cost plastic parts which suggests it might not withstand heavy use. But at just over £100 if it lasts a couple of years that will do. Also lacks a...

Cheap and easy to use.

Battery life is poor. Spare batteries are expensive if you buy Sony. Other brand batteries are hard to find (and may not work). A mains charge would be good as standard equipment.

Easy to use.

Was disappointed that the charger could only be used with a computer. Not much use if you are going away for a few weeks holiday.

Sony HDR-CX220

Very lightweight and easy to use. Built in USB cable. Easy to transfer photos and video. If you can afford it, pay the extra £100 and get the next model up.

Photo camera is not very good with zoom. Overall found it lacking in low light conditions.
