Intel Skull Canyon NUC review

A productivity mini PC masked as a gaming rig

Powerful CPU ; Compact form factor ; Easy port access

Expensive to configure ; High-end gaming requires extra parts

Muddled by confused marketing, the Skull Canyon NUC is an excellent mini PC for productivity with some light gaming on the side.

Intel NUC6i7KYK review: This Skull Canyon NUC smashes all mini-PC preconceptions

Packed with a quad-core processor and Intel's highest-end graphics, the latest Next Unit of Computing was designed to play games. The kicker is that you actually can.

Can perform content-creation tasks in a reasonable amount of time ; Iris Pro Graphics 580 makes it possible to play fairly recent games at 1080p ; Fairly quiet when idling, and tolerable under load ; Comes equipped with a large spread of high-end hardware

Plastic-heavy design feels less sturdy than older NUCs

If this Skull Canyon NUC is any indication of where Intel wants to push the form factor, mini-PC enthusiasts may have a golden future ahead. Even though I’d personally hesitate to categorize this system as a gaming machine, its performance is excellent...

The Intel Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK mini-PC Review

The desktop computing market as a whole has been subject to severe challenges over the last few years. The ultra-compact form-factor (UCFF) PC market that emerged with the introduction of the Intel NUCs (Next Unit of Computing) has been one of the few...

To summarize, Intel has indeed managed to change the game with the NUC6i7KYK. A look at the increase in the gaming capabilities over the previous generation 'gaming' NUCs make the Skull Canyon updates to appear evolutionary in nature. However, the...

Intel Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK Review

Gaming on integrated graphics. Can the powerful Intel Iris Graphics 580 replace a mainstream Nvidia GPU for gaming? We pit the NUC against systems with integrated and dedicated graphics solutions to find out.

easy access to 2x SODIMM slots and 2x M.2 slots, plenty of ports; USB Type-C + Thunderbolt, very fast CPU performance, NVMe or RAID options, small and compact, good build quality, DDR4 RAM, IR sensor

very high core temperature when gaming or under extreme loads, not powerful enough for a dedicated gaming machine, loud fan noise when gaming, no internal 2.5-inch support

With marketing words like "Mini PC. Full-sized performance" used for the Skull Canyon NUC, buyers might get the wrong idea about the system. Its CPU power is indeed very impressive and as powerful as gaming notebooks worth twice the price of the NUC....

Intel Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK Review Steven Walton

In an effort to capture some of the lucrative gaming market, Intel has developed a new NUC aimed at enthusiasts and gamers with the Iris Pro Graphics 580. The Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK is marketed for "intense gameplay," but we'll have to see about that.

Quad-core i7-6770HQ delivers snappy productivity performance in a 0.68L package. Solid connectivity options including Thunderbolt 3.0.

Integrated graphics still only good for casual gaming and external GPUs will be limited to PCIe 3.0 x4 bandwidth. Pricier, hotter and louder than rival units.

Intel NUC6i7KYK (Skull Canyon) Review: For Work, Not Play

The $650 Intel Skull Canyon NUC might seem like a gaming mini PC, but it's more of a dependable productivity desktop that can muster a few big games at low settings. Its blazing Core i7 processor performance and ability to power three 4K displays is...

Cool-looking portable design ; Freedom to add your own RAM, storage and OS ; Strong CPU performance ; Can power multiple 4K displays

Poor gaming performance ; Pricey with necessary parts ; Not for casual users

The Intel Skull Canyon NUC offers speedy performance and can power multiple 4K displays, but it doesn't have much to offer serious gamers.
