Maingear Shift review

Among the ultimate 4K and VR gaming PCs

Clever, original chassis design ; Beautiful paint job ; Near-infinite expansion

Intermittent hardware issues ; Crazy expensive

The Maingear Shift is practically guaranteed to handle 4K and VR gaming with ease. Despite a few nagging component issues, this build is a visually stunning 'flagship gaming PC.'

Review: Maingear Shift Gaming PC

Care to test drive a computer that's (probably) worth more than your car?

Hassle-free upgrades, Clever case design. Eyeball-rupturing speed on games. Doubles as a media center powerhouse

Confusing orientation makes cable clutter a bigger eyesore than usual. No matter how you slice it, seven thousand smackers is a lot for a PC

Maingear Shift Gaming Desktop PC Desktop Review

Beautiful interior and exterior ; Jaw-dropping performance

Limited PCI upgradability due to tri-CrossFire rig ; Pricey

You might not find a faster (or flashier) system than Maingear's Shift, but that doesn't mean this beautiful monster is perfectly priced for its performance.

Maingear Shift review: Maingear Shift

Maingear Shift

Distinctive case design; pristine internal cabling; competitive specs for its price; relatively power efficient, as long as you don't leave it in sleep mode; strong customer service.

Adding hard drives is a pain because of drive bay and cable layout; you can achieve similar performance with a less expensive CPU.

Maingear's Shift is the boutique vendor's new flagship gaming PC. It brings almost everything we expect to find in such a system, from expert craftsmanship to fast overclocking to a case that makes a statement. We found a few minor sticking points,...

Maingear Shift

So why are the I/O ports on the top? Maingear has done something so radical, yet basic that you wonder why anyone else hasn't tried and succeeded. Graphics cards normally pump hot air out the back of gaming systems. Considering the way most...

Speedy on benchmark tests. Intelligent packaging. Intelligent thermal design. Easy-to-upgrade hard drive bays. Uncluttered exposed surfaces. Quiet during normal operations

No eSATA ports. Must open lid with screwdriver to get to ports. Doesn't top every single benchmark test. Graphics cards get loud during 3D gaming

The Maingear Shift both promises and delivers a more mature gaming experience. That's not to say it's solely for Mature-audience games, rather it's the hardcore gamer's PC for when he's older (and wealthier).

Maingear Shift Super Stock Review

How far can you take a Sandy Bridge processor? We've heard that even extreme overclockers seem to hit a wall just beyond 5GHz with Intel's darling new chip. Whatever the limitations, Maingear seems content to take its Shift Super Stock to the brink of...

Two GeForce GTX 590s, two Vertex 3s, and a 5GHz 2600K

Pricey; paint job has a couple of rough spots

Maingear Shift

It's no secret that Nvidia's GeForce GTX 480 cards are the hottest piece of technology people want to gawk at right now. Hell, we were barely able to obtain one of these coveted babies for our feature on Fermi this month.

Tri-SLI Fermi and 4GHz Gulftown equals pure joy

Loud in gaming; puts out enough heat to cook bacon

What Maingear gives you over the Digital Storm is a pretty good price break. While the HailStorm pushed the $7,800 mark, the Shift eases in below $6,900. That’s quite a savings. Of course, for many folks that’s like getting a $10 million price break on...
