Excellent box, bad instructions

 

I bought this drive to use my 2 Seagate 2TB drives in raid 1 attached to my router. From the factory, the dip switch settings didn't match anything in the instruction manual. Initial format of individual drives (with the undocumentd dip switch setting)...

As small as it could be and still fit 2 drives and controller. Fan IS a bit loud, but not unreasonable. Solid aluminum construction built like a tank

Must be plugged into a host (either usb or esata) for raid array to rebuild?!?!?!?!? Documentation is junk, incomplete, inaccurate

The unit has a sticker on the inside that kind of throws you off when you're setting up JBOD or BIG, it's pointing one way, and the board says the opposite (and the instructions are a little fishy). **Go with the sticker, and push the switch that way**...

Great features! The ability to have two separate drives in one enclosure is awesome! It's well worth the Price over a NAS device

Does the Job

 

Purchased this unit to replace an AMS Venus ES2 that bricked during a firmware update. I'll miss the removable air filter the other unit had, but all in all I feel the workmaship of the NexStar is better.

Easy to configure. Vantec includes both USB and eSATA cables and even a bracket for use with an internal SATA connector

Loud. Not the annoying kind of loud, but I can hear it whirring 2 rooms away when the house is quiet ; Wall wart A/C power with a short cord. I'd prefer something with a pigtail that can fit in *any* outlet of my UPS. The cord could be about 1.5 to 2...
