Canon EOS 77D review: DSLR megastar, or one model number too far?

If you've long been pining for a quality all-round DSLR camera than Canon makes a strong case in the 77D. Sure, it's roughly an 80D without the

Much of the 80D's spec at a lower price ; Great through-the-finder autofocus system ; Screen-based live view is great for a DSLR camera (especially with vari-angle screen) ; Exemplary image quality

Lacks 100% optical viewfinder ; No weather-sealing (as per 80D) ; Screen-based live view isn't as precise as through-the-viewfinder ; Finish looks plasticky ; No 4K video

Canon EOS 77D review

Like the EOS Rebel T7i / 800D but with more control

Decent 45-point AF system ; Live view AF performance ; Touchscreen control ; AF-On button ; Excellent image quality

No 4K video capture ; Plasticky finish ; Viewfinder only 95% ; Burst shooting speed

The EOS 77D is a very capable DSLR, but it's a hard camera to get excited about. It does a lot of things well, but there's nothing that makes it stand out from the crowd. If you want an entry-level DSLR, the Canon EOS Rebel T7i / 800D is the one to go...

Canon EOS 77D Review

We review the Canon EOS 77D, Canon's mid-range APS-C Digital SLR, with improved shooting speeds, and updated AF.

The Canon EOS 77D offers a worthwhile upgrade to the 760D, giving an improved design, with better handling making the camera more comfortable to hold. Focus speeds are good in both live view and normal shooting. Continuous shooting has been improved,...

Canon EOS 77D review

The 77D is a Rebel T7i in fancy clothes, but that might be enough for the right user.

Fair amount of direct access control ; Great 45-point AF system ; Dual Pixel Autofocus in live-view ; Good image quality ; Nice handgrip

Small viewfinder ; Low capacity battery ; 1080p video is showing its age

The 77D is a nice midrange DSLR, but it’s held back by a small viewfinder and a spec sheet that is identical to the Rebel T7i. It produces great images (and so-so video), but you can get exactly the same performance for less money by going with the T7i.

Canon EOS 77D

The Canon EOS 77D is a midrange SLR camera that incorporates features from the entry-level Rebel series and the premium 80D.

24MP APS-C image sensor. 45-point cross-type autofocus system. 6fps burst shooting. Dual Pixel AF in Live View. Vari-angle touch LCD. Top information display. Wi-Fi.

Video limited to 1080p. Pentamirror viewfinder.

The EOS 77D has so much in common with the more affordable T7i and pricier EOS 80D, it's easy to pinpoint its place in the world—it's a middle child, the Jan Brady of the Canon SLR line. Beginners are going to be quite happy spending less money on our...

Canon EOS 77D Review

Canon's EOS 77D takes the sensor and autofocus system from the more expensive 80D, adds a newer processor, and packs them all into a lighter body for less money. Find out how it all adds up in our full review. Read more

What's in a name? The EOS 77D may, at first glance, appear to be a new entry for Canon to slot between their Rebel T7i and EOS 80D. But dig a little deeper into the specifications and you'll see that the differentiators between the 77D and the Rebel...
