Full-frame on a budget

Canon EOS RP initial review: Full-frame mirrorless gets affordable

Following the R launch in 2018, the RP targets would-be DSLR buyers as a more entry-level full-frame mirrorless option. But does it make sense to buy?

Canon EOS RP review

Full-frame on a shoestring

Compact and light body ; Very good value for money ; Generous buffer - better than quoted ; Very good AF performance ; Responsive touchscreen

Limited native lens selection ; Rolling shutter and crop in 4K video ; Slightly sensitive metering system ; No sensor-based image stabilization ; Underwhelming battery life ; Silent shooting very limited

Arguably a much more compelling proposition for those looking to move to full-frame mirrorless shooting than the EOS R, the EOS RP is blessed with a good build, great image quality, sound autofocus performance and many further pleasures. The sheen is...

Hands on: Canon EOS RP review

Canon's most affordable full-frame camera yet

Familiar control layout ; Lightweight body ; Dual Pixel CMOS AF ; Touchscreen interface

Cropped 4K video ; Slow burst shooting ; Modest battery life ; Limited RF lens support

While it's a shame there's no RF lens that really complements the EOS RP at the moment, at just $1299/£1,399/AU$2,149 body-only (with a bundled EF-EOS R mount adapter), it's certainly one of the most affordable full-frame cameras going.

Canon EOS RP review: An affordable route into full-frame photography

The EOS RP is intuitive out of the box while offering enough room to grow for established photographers

Solid build quality ; Strong stills performance ; Great autofocus

Falls behind on video features

It’s fun to use, which often translates to “not so good for experienced photographers” but in this case simply means a camera that is intuitive out of the box while offering enough room to grow for photographers already up to speed with the nuances of...

Canon EOS RP Review

Canon EOS RP Review - We review the 26mp full-frame mirrorless camera from Canon, one of the most affordable FF mirrorless cameras available that can record 4K video. Find out how it performs in our full review.

The Canon EOS RP offers a cracking price point for a new full-frame mirrorless camera, compared to the competition, which already seems to be dropping in price, with the competition being around the £2000 price point.

Shutterbugs who like Canon's latest mirrorless cameras but feel that last year's EOS R was too costly will find the new EOS RP more wallet-friendly.

Canon EOS RP review

We've wrapped our full review of Canon's EOS RP - the smallest and lightest current full-frame model on the market. Click through to find out how its autofocus and video stack up, and whether it's right for you.

To begin, the EOS RP is a significant camera for us at DPReview - it's not often that we need to create a new scoring category, but this is the first camera to really fall into the 'Entry-level Full Frame Camera' space. Previous entries, like Canon's...

Canon EOS RP

Canon wants to bring full-frame photography to the masses with the affordable EOS RP. It's a solid camera for the price, but Canon needs to release more low-cost RF-mount lenses to pair with it.

Compact body with full-frame sensor. Vari-angle LCD. Integrated EVF. Quick, accurate autofocus. Macro stacking and time-lapse tools. Wi-Fi. Attractive price.

Small EVF. Low-cost native lenses not available yet. Inconsistent face and eye detection. 4K video suffers from heavy crop. Sensor shows limited dynamic range. Small battery. No built-in flash.

Bottom Line: Canon wants to bring full-frame photography to the masses with the affordable EOS RP. It's a solid camera for the price, but Canon needs to release more low-cost RF-mount lenses to pair with it.
