Canon PowerShot A650 IS review

From simple snapshots to crafty creativity

Great Zoom ; Lots of good features ; Sturdy build

Some might find it a bit chunky ; A bit pricey

The A650 IS might seem a little pricey, but it’s a step up from most super-slim models, with a top-quality 6x zoom lens and a feature set to match. With its wide-ranging metering and exposure options, and an excellent image stabiliser, you’ll get great...

Canon PowerShot A650 IS

Many an upturned nose has been pointed in at compact cameras by 'serious' photographers but the eminently pocketable A650 is not to be sniffed at. A 12.1MP sensor takes in the view via the same 6x zoom lens as Canon's more expensive PowerShot G9

Great set of features, Excellent picture-performance, Good lens

Not the cheapest compact around

The A650 IS might seem a little pricey, but it's a step up from most super-slim models, with a top-quality 6x zoom lens and a feature set to match. With its wide-ranging metering and exposure options, and an excellent image stabiliser, you'll get great...

Canon Powershot A650IS

This is a powerful ‘intermediate' user camera, more than point and shoot but a step down from a DSLR however it has 6x optical zoom and can take 12mega pixel images.

This is not a small unit, but somewhat less in size than a DSLR. It is 11x7x4.5cm and weights close to 400grams with it's 4x'AA' batteries inserted. I found it surprising that such a powerful unit only comes with 'AA' batteries. The case is silver in...

Canon Powershot A650 IS

The Canon Powershot A650 IS is one of the best value compact digital cameras you can find. Picture quality is some way above average and you will also find a wide range of features too. Recommended.

Picture quality - viewfinder - flip out and twist LCD screen - red eye correction tool

Skies can lose colour when the lens is zoomed in

The Canon Powershot A650 IS is one of the best digital compacts on the market. It has a number of highlights and picture quality is up there with the best. In terms of features it has more than most similar digital cameras and I am happy to recommend...

Canon Powershot A650IS

The Canon Powershot brand has a long tradition (insofar as digital cameras can be said to have a tradition) of delivering good quality, admirable specification and ease of use at reasonable prices.

Like many digital cameras, but more so, the Canon PowerShot A650 IS works best in bright light, and less well out of it.

Canon Powershot A650 IS

The A650 IS is a low end bridge camera from Canon with 12Mp, 6x optical zoom and a very good macro feature.

Easier menu; Flip out screen is protective and convenient; Near SLR control; Removable lens bezel gives more scope for creativity

The price compared to the S5

Canon PowerShot A650 IS

A common complaint of people living a fast-paced life is 'I just can't find the time to exercise'. Well it appears Canon has been taking this issue to...

Brilliantly sharp pictures, ISO sensitivities usable up to ISO 800, 6x optical zoom, full manual features

Heavy and chunky, some chromatic aberration issues

It may be big, but if you're looking for a high-end advanced camera with all the bells and whistles that captures brilliant pictures the Canon PowerShot A650 IS is a great choice.

Canon PowerShot A650 IS review

The Canon PowerShot A650 IS proves that you don't need to invest in an SLR to get manual controls and large, detailed pictures. As the new high-end member of Canon's PowerShot A-series line of cameras, the 12-megapixel camera comes packed with manual...

Great picture quality; manual exposure controls; flip-out screen.

Sluggish performance; heavy and bulky; can't use a neck strap.

Performance issues aside, the Canon PowerShot A650 IS combines large, good-looking photos and a generous feature set into a fine midrange shooter.
