PC Plus review: Canon PowerShot A95

If you're after an enthusiast's camera with a beginner's price tag, then the PowerShot A95 should be at the top of your list.

Canon PowerShot A95

Canon describes its new, 5-megapixel, 3 x optical zoom PowerShot A95 as an entry-level camera. This is certainly true if you leave the shooting mode dial on Auto and then point and shoot. Pressing the shutter button half way sets off the auto focus and...

Big, high resolution LCD that rotates through 360 degrees

Not so good for catching unexpected magic moments or fast moving objects

The A95 replaces Canon's popular A80. It gives you some of the capabilities you would find in Canon's G series but in an easy to use, compact form. We especially liked the inbuilt, shutter like lens cover and retracting lens that makes the camera easy...

Canon Powershot A95

Canon Powershot A95 Review. There is a lot of quality packed into the body of this camera. Although the camera is made of plastic it has more features than the average compact digital camera.

Excellent picture quality ; Wide range of features ; Flip out LCD screen increases versatility ; Good value for money

Movie mode is limited ; A few less buttons on the back of the camera would make it more accessible

Excellent all round digital camera. High quality images backed up by more features than almost all other standard digital cameras. Well built too. Recommended.

This model has a good set of features, but it suffers from mediocre image quality and its ridiculously large size. Give it a miss unless your other interests include bodybuilding.

Nice set of features, moveable LCD, great battery life

Huge, heavy, blurry image edges

Canon PowerShot A95

Replacing the PowerShot A80 in Canon's vast arsenal, the PowerShot A95 is a powerful 5MP compact camera and a good buy; point-and-shooters won't soon outgrow it, and it will also satisfy more advanced users.

Excellent image sharpness, colors, and bright exposure. Strong flash. Good battery life. Ability to store custom settings saves time.

Bulky and heavy. Very slight purple fringing in high-contrast areas. Lens angle could be a bit wider. Disappointing movie capabilities.

Canon PowerShot A95 review

Canon PowerShot A95 Canon's 5-megapixel PowerShot A95 steps up as the capable successor to the highly popular A80 . As the A series' momentary flagship model, the A95 offers simplicity for entry-level photographers, a versatile feature set for...

Full feature set for its class; impressive photo quality; quick access to important settings via Function button; accepts accessory lenses; underwater housing available.

Stiff CompactFlash slot cover with flimsy hinge; grip may be uncomfortable for larger hands.

When it comes to features and image quality, this camera is at the top of its class.

T:0.45m - 2.5m (1.5 - 8.2 ft).

Some purple fringing problems ; Inability to deal with wide dynamic range on very bright days ; Focus can hunt and is not particularly fast ; No TIFF or RAW mode ; Flimsy CompactFlash compartment door ; Quite noisy at ISO 200 and 400 ; Zoom is not very...

Canon has taken a popular camera and added just enough to make it even better. It's questionable whether you really need the extra million pixels for 'snapshots', but the results in this test show that the A95 has the optics and processor needed to...
