Canon PowerShot G12

Canon's top end, enthusiast-targeted G12 compact is built like a tank and boasts some impressive firepower. But can it outgun its very impressive high performance rivals?

Vast array of manual controls, Exceptional build quality, Tilt and rotate screen, Accessory shoe, Excellent image quality

Below average video mode, Bulky for a compact, Expensive

Canon PowerShot G12 review

Canon's latest G-series has a lot to live up to. Luckily, it's no slack snapper

A supremely capable digital compact that edges its rivals in most of the areas that count

Canon PowerShot G12

The G12 is Canon's new premium PowerShot digital compact and while it inherits most of the key feature of its predecessor, the G11, it also builds on these with some neat new equipment. The new kit includes a control dial on the front for enhanced...

Image quality, JPEG and RAW capture, build, extensive feature set, multi-angle LCD, great control layout and handling

High ISO noise problems, sluggish focusing, size, price

While it's not without flaws, and it's not cheap, it's the creativity and versatility that are the watch words that really make the G12 - and the G-series cameras as a whole - ideal as pro's back up or an enthusiast’s photographic powerhouse.

Canon G12 review

The Canon G12 offers some interesting improvements over the Canon G11

Good manual controls ; Decent image quality ; Small size ; Good LCD screen

Not as good as a DSLR ; Softness at higher ISOs

The latest in its G-series range of high-flying compact cameras, Canon's PowerShot G12 replaces the flagship PowerShot G11 just a little over a year after the latter was released.

Canon PowerShot G12 review

The Canon PowerShot G12 is an advanced compact camera that can fit in your pocket, yet provides a full gamut of manual controls and a relatively big zoom.

Canon PowerShot G12 review

While the PowerShot G12 builds on the successful formula set out by the G11, it doesn't really add anything new. It is perhaps best to think of it as a G11 Mark II, but this is no bad thing – the G11 is an excellent camera, winning AP's 2010 Enthusiast...

Canon PowerShot G12 camera review

If you're looking for a high performance camera with great imagequality, you should get a digital SLR, right?

Tank-like build feels like it can take a pounding. Tons ofexternal controls on the camera body will bring out the pro in you.Locking down the resolution at 10 MP means it's a better performerin low light. Very good 720p HD capture with stereo sound....

Even lower-priced competing models offer higher-resolution1080p HD video capture. Only digital zooming during video capturedegrades quality. Imaging sensor is still tiny, though otheradvanced compacts have gone big. Antiquated menu system

Canon PowerShot G12 review

The Canon PowerShot G12 is an advanced compact digital camera that can fit in your pocket, yet provides a full gamut of manual controls and a relatively wideranging zoom.

Plenty of manual features, good image quality, versatile lens

Grainy image quality, noticeable lens barrelling, shutter button is poor, rear buttons feel cheap
