A versatile, if bulky, compact camera with incredible reach and excellent picture quality

High-quality 24-600mm lens ; Good image quality ; Good dynamic range and high ISO performance ; High-resolution touchscreen

No built-in viewfinder ; Not pocket-friendly ; No vari-angle screen ; No panorama mode ; No 4K video

The G3 X delivers SLR-like zoom capabilities in a compact package thanks to its excellent lens and image stabilisation, only falling down when faced with fast-moving subjects. It's not a beautiful camera, but it's well built and easy to handle.

The Canon PowerShot G3 X couples excellent image quality with a long zoom range, but it really needs a built-in EVF.

Long zoom range. 1-inch image sensor. Tilting touch-screen display. Framing assist function. Hot shoe supports add-on EVF and Canon Speedlites. Mic and headphone connections. Built-in ND filter. Sealed against dust and moisture. Wi-Fi.

Focus on the sluggish side. Slow burst rate when shooting Raw. Takes a while to turn on. EVF is a pricey accessory.
