Canon Digital IXUS 970 IS

With a 10MP sensor and 5x zoom lens, can the IXUS 970 IS live up to its extravagant price tag?

Canon Digital Ixus 970 IS review

Canon's flagship Ixus camera isn't the style icon we've come to expect from the range.

Canon Digital Ixus 970 IS compact digital camera review

Canon's Ixus line is renowned for its styling, but the Digital Ixus 970 IS's design is a triumph of style over substance. It looks great but its ergonomics are terrible, which is a shame as the technology inside the pretty shell allows you to capture...

The Canon Digital Ixus 970 IS is pricey next to its rivals, and its performance doesn’t justify this.

Canon PowerShot SD890 IS review

Whether human or camera, it's always hard following in the footsteps of a popular sibling, and the near-universally well-liked Canon PowerShot SD850 IS is a harder act to follow than most. Rather than simply bump up the resolution and zoom range for...

Optical image stabilization; optical viewfinder; decent photos.

Poor shot-to-shot performance; small LCD; awkward design; no optical zoom in movie capture.

A solid compact snapshooter, the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS nevertheless disappoints when compared with its predecessors and line-mates.

Canon IXUS 970IS

A certain improvement on it's predecessors

Well designed and stylish, plus a natty feature set make this a fine Canon compact, but one not without its foibles.

Crisp output images; excellent colour reproduction; high zoom; attractive design

Fiddly and sluggish controls; pricey; poor ‘high-sensitivity’ mode

Canon Digital IXUS 970 IS

The 10-megapixel Canon 970 IS features a 5x zoom - the longest in the IXUS range.

Design, control as sensitivity is increased

Expensive, purple fringing

A bit awkward to operate and slight image flaws, but a generally good performance.

Canon IXUS 970IS

5x optical zoom and 10 megapixels in a stylish package

5x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilisation, sharp images, good noise performance up to ISO 800, looks fantastic

Some chromatic aberration issues, power button poorly designed

With few flaws a lot to like, the IXUS 970IS is another great compact camera from Canon. Its most noteworthy feature is the stabilised 5x optical zoom, but there should be something for most users in this package.
