Casio Exilim EX-Z1200

Casio's flagship camera is packed with clever technology including actual face recognition, but do you really need 12 megapixels?

Casio Exilim EX Z1200 digital camera

The Z1200 is Casio's new flagship model and as such, it steams into port with a level of specification befitting the role. To start the build is great, the black and lustrous gunmetal-coloured alloy body is beautifully made and feels rock solid with...

Build and design, low ISO image quality, low ISO image detail, easy to use, manual shooting options

Focus tracking, slow shot-to-shot speed (no burst mode), Loss of detail at higher ISOs, noise issues over ISO 200

This new Casio is certainly a plush model and a neat performer under the right conditions; it’s easy to use and a good price. And, as the new Casio Exilim flagship, thankfully it’s no Titanic, set to sink on its maiden voyage.

Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z1200 review

A compact and bijou snapper from the prodigious watchmaker

Impressive resolution and features ; Good colour, contrast and sharpness ; Well made

Flat surfaces don't promote a firm grip ; Limited optical zoom range

Image sharpness, colour rendition, tonal quality and a 12.1MP sensor, all wrapped up in a slimline package. Focus, exposure modes, and scene modes are versatile, but the lack of 'proper' optical image stabilisation and the 3x optical zoom range curb...

Casio Exilim EX-Z1200 review

Megapixels get too much emphasis these days. Most people really don't need more than 6 megapixels to take nice stills that you can edit, crop, post to the Web, or even print out to a respectable size. Larger images can be more trouble than they're...

Good picture quality; manual exposure controls.

Sluggish shot-to-shot time; mediocre lens; only goes up to ISO 400.

Though hardly perfect, the Casio Exilim EX-Z1200 produces some very nice, very large pictures.

Casio Exilim EX-Z1200

A great example of a happy-snaps compact

A great all-round family camera and, despite a few minor quirks, it delivers excellent results using a good range of features

Casio Exilim EX-Z1200

The Casio Exilim EX-Z1200 is one of the better pocket sized digital cameras. In many ways it is a no frills camera, but this helps to make it relatively easy to use. You can make large prints with this 12 megapixel camera. It has a 3x optical zoom lens.

Simplicity - simple design - sharpness of photos

Variable shutter lag - shutter lag with flash - can take dark photos in lower light

I was surprised at the sharpness of the photos this camera managed to take. It is certainly above average in that area. I also liked the colours it produced. There is a concern over inconsistent shutter delay and when the flash is on the response of...

Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z1200

Apart from a still modest and pocket-friendly depth of 23mm, Casio's newest camera maintains the Exilim tradition of being roughly the same size as a credit card. Shoehorned into these modest dimensions is a mighty 12.1MP sensor

Impressive resolution and features, Good colour, contrast and sharpness, Well made

Flat surfaces don't promote a firm grip, Limited optical zoom range

Image sharpness, colour rendition, tonal quality and a 12.1MP sensor, all wrapped up in a slimline package. Focus, exposure modes, and scene modes are versatile, but the lack of 'proper' optical image stabilisation and the 3x optical zoom range curb...

Casio Exilim Zoom EX Z1200

New flagship digital compact from Casio features a whopping 12.1-megapixel resolution

Build, design, image quality and detail at low ISO, ease of use, manual control

Slow shot-to-shot speed with no burst mode, focus tracking, loss of detail at higher ISOs, noise problems over ISO 200

This new flagship Casio is plush and a neat performer – but under the right conditions. It’s easy to use and it comes in at a good price. Thankfully, while the noise issues and focus tracking are problems, used sensitively, they’re not ones to...

Casio EXILIM Z1200

Boasting a massive 12Mp CCD in a small body, the Z1200 fires the next shots in the pixel-counting wars. Duncan Evans is our conscientious objector on the spot in this exclusive first review.

Massive 12Mp resolution; Excellent build quality; Large LCD screen; Very easy to use; Highly detailed images at low ISOs; Plenty of scene modes; PASM program modes; Face recognition; Focus tracking; Good auto-focus; Big battery

No burst mode
