Great metal build, compact, fast operation, good image quality, low noise up to ISO 800, simple to use, power management

No optical viewfinder, detail loss at highest ISO 2000 settings from noise reduction processing, no manual control (manual mode is actually a simple Program AE mode)

The extra resolution offered on the F40fd might make it a better marketing proposition but means there are a few extra niggles in terms of noise over it’s lower resolution Fuji counterparts and with some slight shadow noise issues when viewed closely...

The occasional confusing design feature aside, the F31fd is intuitive, has some great features, and produces decent images in most situations, particularly low light

Fujifilm Finepix F40fd

Finepix's new F40fd 8.3mp camera produces better photos than some 10mp models we've looked at - with Fujifilm concentrating on the quality of what's captured, not its quantity.

Comfortable design. Excellent full auto mode with many functions for quick snapping, including face detection and Natural & Flash mode.

Few manual controls. Face detection baffled by glasses.

We were impressed by the F40fd's low-light performance, but less so by its slow start-up and shot-to-shot times, and its lack of true manual functions beyond exposure controls. Even so, it's a quick snapper worth investigating

Back in the day, if a new technology was released then the camera with the technology fitted would cost an arm, a leg, a spleen and several feet of small intestine. So why is face detection available in a camera costing £175? Not that we're complaining.
