Fuji's latest budget compact has a 5x zoom and a 2.7-inch monitor, but is it any good?

Fujifilm - FinePix J50

If you're somebody who buys electronics kit by the specifications, you could be very impressed by the Fujifilm FinePix J50. Among its specs are an 8.3-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom and a 67mm LCD display. All ...

This is a neat, easy-to-use camera with a good lens and screen. Unfortunately the bit in between, the sensor, is not of the same quality. At anything other than low sensitivity, image noise level becomes increasingly difficult to live with. What a...

Fujifilm FinePix J50

That's it for the puns. A large zoom and reasonable resolution mean you should get decent images from this family snapper.

Easy to use; Good build quality; Good colour reproduction

Continuous shooting is really slow

Shiny Review: Fuji Finepix J50

There's a nice big screen, but it feels a little bit plasticky. Zara looks at the J50, which she can't bring herself to fall in love with. Maybe next time.

Fujifilm FinePix J50

An affordable compact enters the market…

The J50 promises a lot, but ultimately falls short due to noisy images and the lack of true optical image stabilisation.

FujiFilm FinePix J50

FujiFilm's FinePix J50 is an entry-level, 8.2Mp point-and-shoot camera targeted at users who want something with an above average zoom. The FinePix J5...

Minimal chromatic aberration, 5x optical zoom

Can't really use sensitivities above ISO 200, a little sluggish at times, some sharpness issues

FujiFilm's FinePix J50 doesn't do anything to separate itself from the pack. However, the 5x optical zoom will appeal to users who want a budget camera that can get in that little bit closer.

Fujifilm FinePix J50

The J50 is strictly for beginners who want a simple shooter to start exploring the world of photography. While the extensive modes make up for the lack of fancy features, little has been done to salvage the less-than-desired image quality.

5x optical zoom ; Bright 2.7-inch LCD ; Performance on par with mid-range point-and-shoot ; Useful shooting modes for beginners

Noisy images at ISO 200 and above ; No face detection ; Meter tends to underexpose shots

Conclusion The J50's price tag of AU$249 may be its strongest point, but other than that this shooter has a lot to improve on. Fujifilm told us it is planning a feature-packed J-series shooter with better performance. Until that arrives, we found some...

At 140 / $180 , the Fujifilm Finepix J50 is an interesting proposition on paper - there aren't too many cameras around at this price-point with a 5x optical zoom lens in a slimline, 23mm thick body. It's not the most feature-rich model in the world,...
