Fujifilm - Finepix S2 Pro

We don't usually consider reviewing products that have been available for this long - the Finepix S2 Pro was launched last year - but professional quality digital cameras have a longer life than consumer models and ...

As professional digital cameras go, the Fujifilm Finepix S2 Pro isn't too expensive, yet it's well made, easy to use and produces high quality photographs that are suitable for publication. Just remember to budget extra for a lens.

Fujifilm S2 Pro

Fujifilm are one of a handful of manufacturers who've been producing relatively low cost Digital SLRs for several years now. Their S1 Pro, the predecessor to the S2 Pro we're looking at here, was very popular. In fact, many photographers will still be...

Well designed user interface; Good weight and handling characteristics; Wide selection of features and options; Excellent image quality; 12 megapixel mode is optional; Firewire and USB connections; High usable ISO range

Occasionally camera/menu operation could be faster

Overall, the FinePix S2 Pro is a good camera, but slow autofocus and inadequate continuous shooting modes limit its appeal.

Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro

The FinePix S2 Pro is a heavyweight in every sense of the word. At 1 pound, 15 ounces for the body alone (with batteries), it is one of the heaviest cameras we've reviewed. It's also one of the biggest: The body is a bulky 5.5 inches wide by 2.75...

We also saw some evidence of moiré interference, where fine details (such as the etching on a paper bill used in our tests) produced a colored fringing pattern. This result is probably at least partly due to the interpolation that the camera performs...

Fujifilm FinePix Pro review: Fujifilm FinePix Pro

The Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR (dSLR) replaces the S2 Pro , which enjoyed some modest success among photographers who prized its image quality. Like its predecessor, the S3 Pro uses Nikon F-mount SLR lenses and a (debatably) 6-megapixel...

The widest dynamic range we've seen in a dSLR; top-notch overall out-of-camera image quality; histograms for both luminosity and individual color channels; D-TTL flash exposure control and PC terminal.

Skimpy buffer when using wide dynamic range mode; ISO setting clumsily located on main mode dial; exposure controls operate only in half-stop increments; somewhat heavy-handed noise reduction in ISO 1,600 JPEGs.

This medium-resolution Fujifilm stands out for its unmatched handling of highlights and excellent overall image quality, but it's not meant for rapid-fire shooting of sports and action.

Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro Review

The Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro was announced on January 30th 2002, almost three weeks before Nikon announced the D100 and Canon announced the EOS-D60. The S2 Pro replaces Fujifilm's first price breaking digital SLR the S1 Pro. Just like the S1 Pro the S2...

The new resolution leader for six megapixel D-SLR's (SuperCCD performs well) Good colour and tonal balance, good dynamic range Very low image noise even at high sensitivities (new noise reduction system) Superb Nikon 3D matrix metering More robust body...

Still some slight moiré visible on diagonal detail, more so with 12 mp images 1/2 EV steps for exposure selection / compensation Adobe RGB color space not selectable for in-camera JPEG (only for RAW) Two different types of battery required, slightly...

Once more Fujifilm's D-SLR turns out to be the dark horse of the D-SLR race. The S2 Pro goes a long way to satisfying Fujifilm's claims about SuperCCD, although it's my opinion that the SuperCCD design works far better in a D-SLR (large sensor size)...
