Kodak EasyShare M580

With 14MP, 8x zoom and image stabilisation, the M580 has a lot of features for the money

Kodak EasyShare M580

Despite its availability in a curious choice of shades including silver, purple and caramel brown, Kodak's 14 megapixel, 8x optical zoom, HD video EasyShare M580 is the best looking snapshot camera we've seen from the brand in some time. OK, so the...

Inexpensive price, slender dimensions, 8x optical zoom, HD movie capability with HDMI output, lightweight yet sturdy metal build

Top plate controls badly arranged and unnecessarily fiddly, average image quality

OK, so the M580 is no Fujifilm F80EXR or Panasonic TZ when it comes to reliability and performance, but gets away with it - to an extent - by being cheaper than both. However it's a real shame that a very classy headline specification - 14 megapixels,...

Kodak EasyShare M580 review

The lens of the 14-megapixel Kodak EasyShare M580 starts at 28mm for wide-angle and zooms all the way up to 224mm at full telephoto. The M580 is completely built for automation, and the camera does a good job of it. The Smart Capture mode identifies...

Although the Kodak EasyShare M580 takes great photos on a tripod and is certainly easy to use, it falls short of more-enticing competitors. Shooting a nice photo is effortless with the Smart Capture mode, but you're going to need a tripod or a flat...

Kodak EasyShare M580 review

If you want a camera that takes great photos and has a larger-than-normal optical zoom range, the 8X-optical-zoom Kodak EasyShare M580 fits the bill. It's one of the best point-and-shoot compact cameras we've tested this year in terms of exposure...

Kodak EasyShare M580 digital camera

Kodak's EasyShare M580 snaps good pictures, but it offers ho-hum features

Superior exposure quality, 8X-optical-zoom wide-angle lens, in-camera tagging for social-networking uploads, simple operation with automated Smart Capture mode

Bare-bones feature set for a pocket megazoom, sharing features require connection to computer, image stabilisation isn't very effective, no manual controls

The 8X-optical-zoom Kodak EasyShare M580 serves up great exposure quality and easy controls, at the expense of manual settings. It's a versatile camera for the price, but it falls short on exciting extras.

Kodak EasyShare M580 review

Editors' note: Kodak released a firmware update for the EasyShare M580 that fixes a problem that causes the camera to lock up when changing shooting modes. The update and directions on installation can be found on Kodak's support page .

Wide-angle lens with 8x zoom in a compact body; larger than average LCD; easy photo, video sharing directly from the camera; Mini-HDMI output.

Button design can make use tricky; always starts in auto mode.

The Kodak EasyShare M580 is a solid value for snapshooters in need of a versatile lens in a pocketable package.

Kodak EasyShare M580

Kodak's EasyShare M580 delivers solid images and a nice feature set, including an 8x zoom lens, and easy photo sharing, for just $200.

Excellent image quality in good lighting and with flash. Little shutter lag. 8x optical zoom lens. Large 3-inch LCD. HD video recording. Camera can be charged via micro-USB port.

Optical zoom not available while recording video. Larger body than most same-price competitors.
