Nikon CoolPix 4800

Nikon has squeezed an 8x optical zoom into an affordable mid-range camera, but have too many compromises had to be made.

Nikon Coolpix 4800 Digital camera

The 4800 may be aimed at the more amateur end of the market but it includes some new and interesting features.

Internal memory buffer, ED glass zoom lens

Delicate lens cover, memory partition can confuse

Overall the 4800 is a good option for the beginner since the outfit can be operated without need of a additional SD card. The basic menus are easy to understand although the deeper submenus may need the perusal of the manual. Plenty of Mega pixels for...

Nikon Coolpix 4800

The Nikon Coolpix 4800, is available for £238 / $299 - the Coolpix 4800 is a relatively compact 4 megapixel digital camera, with an 8.3x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36-300mm on a 35mm camera), and a 1.8" TFT screen. The camera is enclosed in a...

Excellent colour and saturation ; Excellent macro mode ; Built in lens cap (rare for ultra zooms) ; Very low purple fringing (if any) ; Will just about fit into large trouser pockets (which is rare for ultra zoom digital cameras) ; AF-assist lamp...

The Nikon Coolpix 4800 with a 4 megapixel sensor, and an 8.3x optical zoom lens, produces good images, with good colour and saturation, and low purple fringing. The 8.3x optical zoom lens lets you get close to your subject, and has an excellent macro...

Nikon Coolpix 4800

Nikon Coolpix 4800 Review. This camera has an 8.3x optical zoom lens. This is much larger than the standard length of lens. Despite this the camera is able to retain a fairly compact body shape.

Extended zoom lens ; Good overall picture quality ; Doesn't have the purple fringing problems of similar models

Only a small amount of memory supplied with the camera ; Indoor portrait disappointing

"Good all round extended zoom camera. Produces photographs with deep, true colours. One for your shortlist."

Nikon CoolPix 4800

Given its snapshot camera appearance, the 4800s performance is a pleasant surprise. Despite the somewhat limited four-megapixel resolution, the macro test shots we took display an impressive amount of detail thanks to the excellent opt

Nikon Coolpix 4800 review

Nikon Coolpix 4800

Great zoom range; fast zooming; decent electronic viewfinder performance; useful scene modes; excellent red-eye prevention.

Few manual controls; lots of visual noise in images; no manual exposure controls.

A useful wide-to-supertelephoto zoom range and a competent EVF are the key attractions of this 4-megapixel point-and-shoot compact.

Nikon Coolpix 4800

The 4MP Nikon Coolpix 4800 is a good camera, but falls short of being a great one. That said, it is a reasonably priced alternative to more expensive superzooms.

Powerful 8.3X optical zoom lens. Best Shot Selector feature really works.

Slow shooter for a compact camera (though average for a superzoom, which this is approaching). Flash images dull, EVF murky. Smallish LCD.

Nikon Coolpix 4800

If you're new to digital photography you may wish to read the Digital Photography Glossary before diving into this article (it may help you understand some of the terms used).

High resolution, lots of detail ; Sharp 8.3x zoom with good contrast ; Bright, vivid colors ; Simple point-and-shoot operation ; Good price ; Excellent macro capabilities ; Lightweight ; Good battery life, option to use 2CR5 batteries ; Good flash...

Images quite noisy even at ISO 50 ; Some focus errors in low light at long end of zoom ; No exposure information in record or playback mode ; Mediocre screen and EVF ; Some exposure problems in high contrast/very bright scenes ; Occasional white...

Viewed in isolation the Coolpix 4800 would be a very impressive camera indeed (and as you can see from the samples gallery on the next page it's capable of great results). There's little to really complain about here - especially given the sub-$400...
