Has Nikon hit the winning formula with this high-spec ultra-compact?

Nikon Coolpix S600 digital camera

The S600 wears its "Style" moniker well with a metal body and a good set of easy-to-use point and shoot features that include that fast start-up time, advanced functions such as auto ISO mode and high ISO capability (up to ISO 3200) and excellent...

Build and styling, image quality, easy to use, screen, responsive

No manual controls or overrides, underpowered flash, it might start quickly but you still can’t shoot for a couple of seconds

The Nikon Coolpix S600’s lightening fast start-up belies an average (overall) performance elsewhere in the camera, so it is a bit of a mixed bag. And yet, the decent design and build and good image quality might just sway it for you.

Nikon Coolpix S600

One of Nikon's higher-end compacts, the S600 isn't lacking in specifications. It's got every feature you could wish for.

But while the specifications are bang on the money, the S600 doesn’t feel as expensive as it should. Even though the casing is metal it still manages to feel a bit insubstantial and cheap. The menu scroll wheel on the back is a bit loose and wobbly and...

Nikon Coolpix S600

The Nikon Coolpix S600 is a 10 megapixel digital camera with a 4x, wide angle zoom lens. It has impressive start up and shutter delay times. The Coolpix S600 is small enough to fit in a pocket and like other Nikon cameras it is easy to use

Ease of use - wide angle lens - shutter lag times - camera start up time

Picture quality

Despite a number of good points such as start up time, ease of use and shutter lag times I felt this camera did not hit the spot when it came to picture quality.

Nikon Coolpix S600

The S600 offers some nice features in a sharp body such as 3cm macro and 28mm wide angle lens.

Good build; Nice design; Great macro performance; Good colour rendition

Don't like the plastic lens cover leaves

Nikon CoolPix S600

Sitting towards the top of the Nikon compact camera range, the CoolPix S600 is equipped with a variety of features and settings that should appeal to ...

Optical image stabilisation, fairly good image quality, fast startup time

Some purple fringing issues

A solid compact camera from Nikon, if you have a bit of money to spend the S600 offers a few nice features such as vibration reduction and in-camera red-eye correction on top of some fairly good 10 megapixel images.

Nikon Coolpix S600

The Nikon Coolpix S600 is a capable and speedy basic point-and-shooter, but at $300, it should offer more than a bare-bones feature set and so-so performance.

Slim body. Lightning-fast boot-up time. Variety of useful in-camera editing options.

Expensive. Limited feature set. Long lag time between shots. Daylight shots slightly muted. Significant barrel distortion. Mediocre face-detection performance.
