Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

The Nikon S9100 is skinnier than a wafer that's been run over by a steamroller (well, nearly) but it packs a mighty zoom range. Switch it on and an 18x optical lens protrudes Pinocchio schnoz-style out of its pocketably slim body. Impressive stuff if...

Nikon Coolpix S9100

As the variety and quantity of “travel zoom” compacts grows, kicked off in earnest by Panasonic's TZ series a couple of years back and now sporting everything from Full HD video and GPS to 3D shooting, it was about time Nikon pimped its Coolpix series...

Huge optical zoom range from a camera that will still fit in the pocket, Full HD video with stereo sound and HDMI output, good build quality, easy to use, built-in effects filters are fun

Visible pixel fringing between areas of high contrast and corner softening at maximum wide angle - but neither are uncommon, no mains charger

The S9100 is something of a sheep in wolf’s clothing; though styled like an enthusiast model, at least in its black incarnation, when you drill down into the feature set you discover a pretty much “auto everything” point and shoot.

Nikon Coolpix S9100 hands-on - Pocket-lint

Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

18x superzoom lens, HD video recording and 12.1MP sensor

Impressive zoom range in a compact body ; High quality LCD screen ; Performance at high sensitivities

Unreliable autofocus at the long end of the zoom ; Fiddly dial on rear of the camera body ; Barrel distortion at wide end of the zoom

Slim compact digital cameras with a large zoom lens were first made popular by Panasonic's TZ range of cameras, including the recent Panasonic TZ20 and its 16x zoom lens.

Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

The Coolpix S8000 marked Nikon's surprisingly late entry to the compact ultra-zoom market, but it struggled to compete with the more established ranges from Panasonic, Canon and Samsung.

A compact ultra-zoom camera that copes well in low light is a rare treat; excellent videos and a superb screen round it out nicely

Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a solidly built, automatic camera with a huge 18x zoom lens, and it can produce very good images. Updated, 8 Jun 2011

Styled like a high-end enthusiasts’ compact, complete with natty pop-up flash and stereo microphones, the S9100 is nevertheless an accessible point and shoot. While we'd direct experienced photographers not requiring a large zoom to the Coolpix P300,...

Nikon Coolpix S9100 - digital camera review

The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a step up from the S8100 . That camera features a 10x 30-300mm-equivalent lens, whereas the S9100 has an 18x 25-450mm-equivalent lens. Otherwise, the cameras look the same (though the S9100 is slightly larger) and the...

The Nikon Coolpix S9100 has fast shooting performance, a wide, long lens in a pocketable body, and several useful and fun shooting modes.

The Coolpix S9100's photo and video quality is soft, particularly at high ISOs and in low-light conditions. It also lacks auto picture rotation.

Nikon produces another solid point-and-shoot compact megazoom with the Coolpix S9100 by offering fast performance, good photos, and an excellent feature-to-price ratio.

The S9100 resembles an enthusiast's compact, but handles like a point and shoot, leading the pack with an 18x optical zoom
