Best Imaging Innovation: Olympus E-330 Live View

Olympus reinforces its heritage as an innovative manufacturer with the E-330. It's the first digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses to offer a tilting LCD monitor on the back along with an optical viewfinder. Thanks to its Live View technology,...

Olympus E-330

Excellent image quality.Excellent metering.Excellent colour rendition.Effectively noise-free up to 400 ISO.Comlete range of formats (RAW, TIFF and JPEG).Built-in SSWF sensor cleaning system.Useful Live View system.Powerful built-in flash.

14 to 45 mm kit lens a bit soft focus at the wide angle end.Noise reduction system lowers overall image sharpness. Some functions are overly complicated.TTL viewfinder is a touch too small.

Olympus E-330

Olympus' Evolt E-330, an upgrade of the company's previous E-300 model, is unique among mid-range digital SLR cameras for two reasons: first, it's the only digital SLR currently available that allows you to use its LCD screen as a viewfinder, and...

Includes an LCD viewfinder, small body, good optics, good image quality

Limited lens selection, no LCD status display, LCD screen is annoying when looking through the viewfinder, no electronic image stabilisation

The Olympus Evolt E-330 is a good camera, but its standout feature - the LCD veiwfinder - is not that useful for most photographers. Both the Nikon D50 and the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT offer better image quality and a broader assortment of lenses....

E-330

The release of Olympus' E-330 digital SLR is something of a surprise. The company recently introduced the E-500 to replace the E-300 as the company's entry-level digital SLR. The new E-330 is prettier, but you can't miss the similarities between it and...

Olympus' live-view feature opens up some interesting, mostly specialized, shooting applications, such as high-magnification telephoto or macro photography.

Overall, the E-330 is expensive considering the alternatives, especially as few users are likely to benefit from the live-view options.

To view directly from the imaging sensor, the reflex mirror has to be locked in the up-position. This prevents auto-focus, and denies any attempt to sneak a look through the optical viewfinder
