Olympus E-400 review

Review of Olympus' latest compact

Features ; Performance ; Build quality

Price ; Lack of grip

The finish is a step up from the E-500, but the handling is perhaps a step backward

Olympus E-400

This is a camera replete with much clever stuff packed into a tiny body. A worry is the not so svelte price; the twin lens kit including a 14-42mm optic (used here) and a very compact 40 to 150mm (80 to 300mm in 35mm terms) lens retails at around £850....

Impressive image quality, ease of use and handling (despite compact size), nice kit lens, and it's responsive

Pentamirror viewfinder is gloomy and small

The 10-megapixel Olympus E-400 digital SLR harks back to the past with a diminutive design closely modeled on the Olympus OM-1.

Olympus E-400 DSLR: Review

Compact and light-weight - is the Olympus E-400 the DSLR to take everywhere?

Compact and light-weight ; Automatic sensor cleaning

Some may find it awkward to handle ; Too many controls in menus not buttons ; Auto whitebalance gives poor results ; Price Comparison ; Olympus E-400 DSLR

If you have small hands and want the full control of a DSLR for the size of a bridge camera you're going to love the E400. It has a super compact design for a DSLR and provides reasonable performance for single shots. Images are mostly good if you...

Olympus E-400 DSLR Review

The E-400 - a bantamweight with the punching power of a light heavyweight, as Duncan Evans reveals while testing Olympus' lightest and latest, Four Thirds Standard SLR.

Lightweight; Good colour and sharpness; Fast and accurate autofocus; Dual format, xD and CF; Good shutter speed range; Lots of picture modes for beginners; Ultrasonic CCD cleaning; Good Exposure Compensation range; Built in flash works well

Built in flash limited in power

With lots of picture modes and a generally simplified body control system, this is a DSLR that beginners can pick up and use. It produces very good results, and with a high 10Mp resolution can equally be used for landscapes and portraits. The autofocus...

Olympus E-400

Welcome to the only really new SLR this year. The Nikon D80 is so similar to the D50/D70s that it doesn't really count as a 'new' design, while the Canon EOS 400D is essentially a revamped 350D and the Sony Alpha 00 is a heavily revised Dynax 5D.

Olympus E-400 DSLR Double Zoom Kit

The Olympus E-400 Digital SLR is the world's smallest digital SLR - it features 10 megapixels, anti-dust sensor, and the double zoom lens kits provides two new lenses.

Stylish Ultra compact "retro" styled Digital SLR body (World's smallest) ; Matching compact lenses ; Very good image quality ; Excellent colour ; Simple to use, thanks to AUTO and Scene modes (although practice is recommended) ; Very good kit lenses...

The Olympus E-400 is an impressive digital SLR camera, offering excellent image quality, and an excellent range of lenses with very precise manual zoom control. The screen is good, and the camera can produce excellent photos. If you can stick with the...
