Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1 review

Is the smallest Olympus CSC as easy to use as it promises?

Slim and compact design ; Full HD video recording ; Simple control layout will suit beginners ; 16:9 LCD is great for recording video ; Art filters

Reflective LCD screen ; 16:9 LCD aspect ratio wastes a lot of space when taking stills ; No finger grip

Designed for the casual snapper who doesn't want to compromise on image quality, the Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1 is similarly specified to contemporary Olympus PEN models, but with an emphasis on ease of use and simplicity of design.

Can the Olympus E-PM1 entry-level Pen Mini deliver big on its promise?

Fair value ; Quieter lens ; Quick ; competent auto focus

No built-in flash ; No handgrip ; Rear controls minimal and tiny

Olympus E-PM1 Pen Mini

The 12.3-megapixel E-PM1 - from a 13.1 MP Live MOS (or CMOS) sensor - is the new baby of the Olympus range of interchangeable lens compacts, or, as its manufacturer prefers, ‘Pen' system. The other two models are the flagship E-P3 for just under a...

Good value when bought with standard zoom, competent and consistent performance, quick and responsive for the most part

No integral flash, rear operational controls and on-screen symbols are tiny, no dedicated delete button nor handgrip

Although theoretically all Olympus digital Pen cameras have been targeted at compact “upgraders” since the E-P1 was unveiled in late 2009, the E-PM1 is the one that offers the most obvious step-up potential for happy snappers wanting to up their game.

Olympus E-PM1 - digital camera review

Size and affordability remain the bane of the interchangeable-lens camera (at least here in the U.S.), but Olympus' PEN E-PM1 hits the closest to the target that I've seen thus far. It's not perfect, and in fact it's kind of hard to get excited about....

The Olympus PEN E-PM1 has a relatively compact and appealing design, and operates similarly enough to a point-and-shoot that upgraders needn't be intimidated. Plus it's priced aggressively.

If you're picky, the image and video quality may not completely satisfy you.

If you're looking for a step-up model that's still pretty compact, the Olympus PEN E-PM1 is a solid, affordable choice.

Olympus Pen E-PM1 review

There are three compact system cameras (CSCs) in the current Olympus range. They all share the same sensor and image processor, but differ in terms of features, size and weight. The first two are successors to previous models, in name at least, with...

It's far from perfect, but its low price makes the E-PM1 a brilliant step up from a compact or ultra-zoom camera

Olympus PEN mini E-PM1 review

Although more modern in appearance, the new PEN mini maintains the core values of the stylish and expensive-looking PEN range in a considerably smaller package. Its undeniably sensual aesthetic is embodied by its brushed metal exterior available in a...

If you’re stepping up from a standard compact camera you’ll feel quite at home with the PEN mini, and love its enhanced image quality, but DSLR users may well find it somewhat frustrating to use.

Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1

Review The Olympus PEN Mini is a no-fuss, interchangeable lens camera created for the casual photographer that wants the respectable image quality of a Micro Four Thirds system at the price and size of a compact.

With the E-PM1 Olympus has released a sexy, versatile, pocketable camera that manages to bring increased ease-of-use to the PEN family without sacrificing the creative and technical performance of its more expensive models. This is a camera that will...
