We were surprised at the lack of distortion at both ends of the Olympus SP-590UZ's massive zoom spectrum, even without the technical wizardry of the Nikon Coolpix P90's distortion-correction function (it's possible that this function is there but...

A mixed bag. We liked the extreme aspirations of the Olympus SP-590Z but felt it didn’t fully realise that 24x zoom’s potential. Against that is the solid dual-stabilisation setup and the lack of noise in good light.

If it is plenty of zoom you are after you will struggle to find more than the 26x zoom on offer here. The camera does a good all round job and achieves what it sets out to do. It has a set of manual exposure controls and a wide angle lens.

Long lens - start up times

Purple fringing - sharper images when zoom is not used

I find with these larger cameras there is less difference in the quality of the photos they take. Therefore whether you buy the Olympus SP-590UZ in preference to other similar cameras is likely to come down how you fell about the features and handling....

Boasting a lengthy zoom capacity, with a focal length of 26-676mm, the Olympus SP-590UZ is a quality compact/DSLR bridge camera.

A mixed bag. We liked the extreme aspirations of the Olympus SP-590Z but felt it didn’t fully realise that 24x zoom's potential. Against that is the solid dual-stabilisation setup and the lack of noise in good light.

The Olympus SP-590UZ is a frustrating camera. It's comfortable to hold and relatively intuitive (apart from the annoying lack of auto flash pop-up) with a good mix of automatic scene modes and scope for manual capture. There are also plenty of fun...
