Panasonic DMC-FZ8

Like to get close to the action but can't afford an SLR? You want a small compact with a mighty lens, as Duncan Evans investigates.

That 12x optical zoom; Straightforward control layout; Thumbstick for extra control; Plenty of manual control; Fast and pleasing to use

Image quality mediocre

There's one prime selling point of this camera and that's the 12x optical zoom which reaches to an impressive 432mm equivalent with the wide aperture only shifting from f/2.8 to f/3.3 along the way. It's a little sluggish to start, but rattles along...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8

The popular FZ7 superzoom gets an update

Raw option, Mini-DSLR styling, Speed of use

Aggressive noise reduction, A little too small for some

The FZ8 has a feature-set suited to a wide range of applications, and as an ?all-rounder? it's definitely one worthy of consideration. Best stick to low ISO settings though.

While it does have a few things going for it, including a big zoom and comfortable design, the soft edges and colour reproduction issues mean the FZ8 isn't as impressive as it could have been.

Nice design, big zoom, nice image stabilisation options

Soft pictures in some parts, oversaturated reds
