Panasonic Lumix TZ40

Simply one of the best travel compacts on the market.

Impressive zoom for such a compact body ; Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity welcome ; Great build quality ; Effective image stabilisation

Small buttons prove fiddly ; No Raw capture ; Small touchscreen icons

While it’s generally a positive picture in terms of design, the Panasonic TZ40 isn’t completely without flaw. Unfortunately the buttons found of the rear of the camera are a touch on the small side, and as a result can prove problematic to press while...

Panasonic TZ40 review

Travel compact camera gets an upgrade - but how does it fare?

Good zoom length ; Touchscreen ; Digital filters ; GPS and Wi-Fi

No raw capture ; Wi-Fi functions could be better

The Panasonic TZ40 travel zoom offers the series' highest resolution so far

Solid build ; 18 megapixel stills ; Full HD video

A bit expensive ; Buttons could be larger

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40

The Panasonic Lumix TZ40 - or Lumix ZS30 as it's known to our friends across the Atlantic - is one of those enabling cameras. It's got a 20x optical zoom with optical image stabilisation squeezed into a small and pocketable design which means...

20x optical zoom, excellent image stabilisation system, super-fast autofocus, responsive touchscreen, Wi-Fi and NFC will come to the rescue at those unexpected moments, close-up macro mode, improved battery life, loads of on-board tech, fair price,...

Some colour noise in shadow areas, some chromatic aberration (purple fringing), Wi-Fi modes can be fiddly due to password entry process and occasional timeouts, widest aperture settings not as capable as some higher-spec models, continuous autofocus...

We've always had a soft spot for the TZ-series, and the TZ40 has just made that a little bit softer. We don't feel that the push to an 18-megapixel resolution was necessary, but that doesn't stop the TZ40's combination of 20x optical zoom, excellent...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS30 review

For the Lumix DMC-ZS30, Panasonic took what was already an excellent camera, the ZS20 , tweaked it a bit and added Wi-Fi. The result is another excellent compact megazoom that gives you a bit more for your money.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS30 gets you a lot of features in a compact body including a 20x zoom lens, 3-inch touch screen, Wi-Fi for remote control of the camera as well as easy sharing, high-speed and full HD movie capture, and GPS. Photo quality and...

The power and Wi-Fi buttons are too easy to accidentally press. There's no raw capture option. Battery life can be short if you do more than just take photos. Photos look soft and have visible noise/artifacts when viewed at full size even at its lowest...

A fully loaded travel zoom that's fun to use, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS30 has a lot to offer both advanced and casual snapshooters.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 review

Panasonic has been wise with its improvements to its flagship travel compact camera. The Lumix DMC-TZ40 offers as good a feature set as any in its class, not least of which is a versatile and effectively stabilised lens, excellent touchscreen...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS30

Panasonic's compact Lumix DMC-ZS30 features a long 20x zoom lens and integrated Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS, but image quality disappoints.

The ZS30 starts and shoots in 1.5 seconds and manages a short 0.1-second shutter lag at its widest angle. Focus is reasonably fast when zoomed all the way in, it took about 1.2 seconds to bring an out-of-focus subject into crisp view and fire a shot....
