Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200

With a constant f/2.8 max aperture and 24x optical zoom this is a very versatile camera.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture ; Excellent build quality and good handling ; Impressive image quality

Lack of eye sensor can be a pain ; EVF could be larger

Panasonic Lumix FZ200

Superzoom cameras have been stretching zoom capacities for years, but it looks as though Panasonic's latest Lumix FZ200 has taken a different approach: it's opted to maintain its predecessor's 24-600mm equivalent zoom, but now offers an f/2.8 aperture...

An f/2.8 aperture throughout zoom range, 24-600mm equivalent range is significant, vari-angle screen, decent battery life, raw file capture available

It’s big, at more than £500 it is pricey, no touchscreen, viewfinder refresh rate on the low side (makes it a bit juddery), no display of AF/MF on rear screen, mic input is 2.5mm not 3.5mm

The FZ200 has its f/2.8 aperture trump card to play, which will beat any other superzoom competitor out there, even the larger-sensor versions. Now that’s quite a statement, but this is quite a camera.

Panasonic Lumix FZ200 review

A fast aperture and direct controls on a bridge camera

Fast f/2.8 aperture ; Raw capture ; Lots of direct controls ; Full articulated LCD screen ; Fast, efficient AF system

Luminance noise even at low ISOs ; Images sometimes flat ; EVF gives blue tint in mixed lighting

Bridge cameras are perhaps sometimes unfairly dismissed as not being tools for 'proper photographers'. Perhaps what this niche has needed is a newcomer to storm onto the scene with a specification list that will make all the dedicated DSLR users out...

Panasonic's Lumix FZ200 is across-the-board excellent

For those searching for a long-zoom camera that falls in between a point-and-shoot and a digital-SLR experience, look no further.

The ; has an excellent f2.8 25-600mm zoom lens; fast shooting performance, even when shooting in raw or raw plus JPEG; and excellent picture and video quality for its class. It has a ton of shooting options, including full manual for stills and movies....

The FZ200 is expensive, especially if all you're after is a long zoom lens. It doesn't have built-in GPS or Wi-Fi, or a proximity sensor for switching from the LCD to EVF. The SD card slot and battery compartment can't be accessed when the camera is on...

If you're searching for a long-zoom camera that falls in between a point-and-shoot and digital SLR experience, look no further than the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150 was our favourite ultra-zoom camera of 2011, but this year's FZ200 ups the stakes yet again. It keeps its predecessor's relatively modest 24x zoom but now maintains an f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range....

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 review

Although they may seem like slight changes, the new EVF and the increase in maximum aperture throughout the zoom range make the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 a notable improvement over the FZ150. The small sensor is always going to be a compromise in a...

Panasonic Lumix FZ200 review

While a large optical zoom used to be enough to mark out a bridge camera, the proliferation of such technology now means that manufacturers are having to do more to make their model's stand out....

Contact maximum aperture of f/2.8 is a real welcome feature, excellent build quality, good handling, solid image quality

Lack of an eye sensor on the viewfinder, viewfinder itself could do with being larger, LCD screen not the highest resolution
