Does Pentax's latest do enough to beat up the DSLR big boys?

Pentax K-r

The 12.4 effective megapixel K-r is Pentax's follow-up digital SLR to the entry level K-x, a sound, good value starter option. Incorporating a standard APS-C sized sensor it sits just below the more fully featured K-7 and K-5 digital SLRs in Pentax's...

Quick and responsive, crisp results using 18-55mm standard zoom, good range of colour tones with nice deep blacks, compact and lightweight body

No HDMI output, no dedicated video record button (via shutter release only)

With the K-r it appears Pentax has merged its entry level and mid range DSLRs into one comprehensive, good value device. And it has done it very well, with little apparent compromise. To pick holes in the K-r’s standalone performance feels like...

Pentax K-r review

With full specs, price, sample images, high ISO samples and more

Good image quality ; Great build quality ; Impressive kit lens

Pentax lens system is limited ; Mixed video quality and features

Pentax has long been the bridesmaid of the DSLR market. As professionals almost exclusively opt for Nikon and Canon bodies to get access to top-end lenses and accessories, that apathy towards Pentax trickles down to consumers.

Pentax K-r with DAL 18-55mm review

Pentax's consumer SLRs used to trail behind models by Canon, Nikon and Sony, but that changed with the launch of the K-x in 2009. With blazing fast performance and very low noise, there were only a few minor niggles that kept us from giving it an...

With breakneck performance, friendly controls, tons of features and remarkably little image noise, we’re won over by this keenly priced SLR.

Pentax K-r review

Using the Pentax K-r is a pleasurable experience and the resulting images are just as enjoyable. The camera is clearly aimed at a younger, more techno-savvy audience than many DSLRs, with a strong leaning towards editing and adjusting your images...

Pentax K-r

By the time you read this you will be able to buy this rather nice DSLR unit in a range of colours as well as the more normal black. To me – providing it's not pink – I could not care what colour it is providing I get decent images.

The ISO range is between 100 and 25600, the image stabilization (shake reduction) works well even with outside images taken on a windy day providing you can find something solid to anchor yourself against. While it claims HD video it is only 1280x720

Pentax K-r DSLR review

Pentax has long made very good digital SLRs that offer excellent image quality with simple, intuitive interfaces. And while their latest cameras pack a thorough selection of high-end features, they also have something that a lot of other SLR vendors...

If you’re looking for a small, lightweight, inexpensive “starter” camera, then the Pentax K-r is a great choice. With its huge array of features and nice image quality, it might end up being the only SLR you never need. Even if you’re a more serious...
