With a design based on its previous starter model in the Pentax K-m, and some trickle down features from the higher end K7, the new K-x in offering 12.4 effective megapixels from a 12.9-megapixel CMOS sensor should in theory offer a best of both...

Comprehensive feature set that ticks most of the boxes for today’s DSLR user, sharp results with kit lens and at optimal settings

No HDMI output for hooking the camera up to a high-def TV or monitor despite it offering HD movies, no rechargeable battery provided

Ultimately the K-x is a camera that will endeavour to provide both beginners and more experienced users with their, er, kicks. It’s an affordable, well-featured all-in-one device and very capable with it too, making it a tempting proposition for those...

Offering a conventional digital SLR design and layout, the 12.4Mp Pentax K-x won't baffle anyone trading up from a compact camera, as a point-and-shoot auto picture mode is the most prominent setting among the 14 options on its top-mounted mode dial....

The Pentax K-x digital SLR camera is a beginner-friendly model featuring most of the latest must-haves – and the best choice here for those wanting video too – but the lack of a rechargeable battery is a pain.

The K-x is available in red, blue and white, but in its more conservative black finish we'd struggle to distinguish it from the cheaper K-m.

This capable all-rounder has excellent performance and image quality, but lens upgrades can be expensive.

Pentax K-x

 

A great all-rounder with little to complain about as a stills camera. However, the video sound picks up a lot of internal noise.

If you can tolerate the slow Live View autofocus and a few minor handling flaws then this camera is a near perfect choice for a first DSLR. Just be sure the firmware is up-to-date to avoid possible power issues. Overall, the K-x offers an image quality...
