Pentax MX-1

The Pentax MX-1 is a camera with historical grounding. This digital reimagining of the film-based MX-series isn't an interchangeable lens camera like the original DSLR, instead it's a smaller-scale, 1/1.7-inch sensor compact camera with a built-in...

Great battery life, wide aperture lens throughout zoom, built-in ND filter, responsive in use, decent macro mode, good image quality, solid build quality

Chunky build, no manual lens ring, no hotshoe for viewfinder, images can look washed out and have off-colour white balance, would like wider-angle lens than the 28mm equivalent, tracking mode none too good

First impressions can be lasting, but they can also be turned on their head - and the latter is what the MX-1 has done to us.

Pentax MX-1 review

How appealing is this retro-styled premium compact?

Wide aperture lens ; Brass construction ; Tilting screen

Boxy design ; Dated user interface ; Some odd handling quirks

Pentax MX-1 review

With around seven other credible competitors, it's not surprising to find that the Pentax MX-1 offers little we've not seen before. Its size and the lack of a viewfinder may dampen enthusiasm for the model, and it's disappointing to find little by way...

Pentax MX1

This is a small but powerful digital camera from Pentax. Having recently tested myself on a DSLR offering I now downsize but not as far as ‘point and shoot' as this digital camera has a lot to offer yet it can still fit in most pockets.

It is 12.5x6x6cm the last figure the width is with lens cap on and the unit switched off. Add 3cm to the width when switched on and fully zoomed in. The body is metal and that is why the units weight is 398grams. 12MP may seem small as some less...

Pentax MX-1 Review

The Pentax MX-1 is a new "serious compact" with a bright f/1.8 4x optical zoom lens, tilting 3 inch screen and slightly larger than normal backlit CMOS sensor. The MX-1 features a retro design with top and bottom brass plates and is available in silver...

Metal top and bottom plates, Excellent macro performance, Dual axis electronic level, Rubber grip front and back, Timelapse / High Speed Video with sound, Lots of Digital Filters / Effects, Bright f/1.8 4x optical zoom lens

Lacks flash hot-shoe, Competitors have additional controls around lens etc, Feels large and heavy, HDR / Panoramic stitching not great, Slow write times

Pentax MX-1 camera

Pentax's retro throwback is anything but old-fashioned inside

Wonderful design and ergonomics ; Excellent lens and sensor

Slow to save RAWs ; Size rivals mirrorless competitors

Pentax’s premium compact is an excellent example of an enthusiast-focused digital camera -- it’s incredibly well-built, has a good sensor and lens combo, and is very similar in handling to a full-size digital SLR. It can be slow when used to its...

Pentax MX-1

The Pentax MX-1 is a 12MP high-end compact camera with a fast 28-112mm equivalent zoom lens - the first camera of its type that Pentax has created. With a rich history in camera design, it seems fair that Pentax would seek to recapture the two-tone...

Excellent image quality in JPEG and Raw ; Solid build ; Appealing design ; Good color, practical color modes ; Overall good performance in low light ; Good optical quality - center to corner sharpness, with little sign of chromatic aberration ; Fast...

Too large for most pockets ; No hot shoe or accessory port ; Tungsten lighting sometimes left quite yellow by AWB system ; Motor sounds audible when zooming (with optical zoom enabled) ; Lacks second dial to give easy control of both aperture and...

Pentax's first entry into the premium pocket camera category is big on image quality but also a bit big for the pocket, which narrows its niche a little more than its competitors. Still, it's a very capable camera with a good set of features, a...

Pentax MX-1

The Pentax MX-1 is a beautifully designed camera, but some issues with image quality and performance prevent it from living up to its potential.

Gorgeous design with brass construction. Excellent control layout. Tilting rear display. Fast lens. Raw shooting support. Low noise through ISO 1600.

Very soft edges at widest angle. Heavy distortion when shooting Raw. Unresponsive for a few seconds after taking a photo. No hot shoe or EVF option.

While neither is common enough to be an expected feature in this level of camera, Pentax chose not to include GPS or Wi-Fi in the MX-1. If you're looking for a Wi-Fi-enabled camera with a bigger sensor and a fast lens, take a look at the Samsung EX2F,...
