Pentax Optio A20 digital camera

So often these days a 10-megapixel compact means images full to bursting with noise, Fuji has gone a long way to controlling that noise in its cameras and on the evidence of this camera, Pentax has been working hard to subdue it too. Pentax has been a...

Excellent metering, great all-metal build, good feature set, great image quality, low noise

Face AF can be slow, screen difficult to use in direct sunlight, no optical viewfinder, manual exposure control limited by inflexible aperture control steps

Pentax has been a consistent performer in terms of the good quality of cameras it launches and the A20 continues that trend. It has a great feature set; even exposure compensation, a great lens and a sensor that despite the high resolution, still...

Pentax Optio A20 review

Pentax's flagship compact is slow and steady

Crisp and sharp images

Slow ; Multi-functional controls are over-complex

This is a camera that grows on you: once you've seen the stunning images it can produce, you'll forgive it almost anything

Pentax Optio A20

If the emperor bought a digital camera to go with his set of new clothes, it would certainly be a 10-megapixel model. Few 'advances' in photography have raised so many problems as the leap from 7MP and 8MP sensors to 10MP.

The A20's images are totally crisp and sharp in a way that few compactscan achieve

It feels slow and its multi-functional controls are over-complex to use.

This is a camera that grows on you: once you've seen the stunning images it can produce, you'll forgive it almost anything.

Review: Pentax Optio A20

Another 10 megapixel camera hits the shelves.

Easy to use, excellent menu design

Unremarkable features, LCD a little dull

In terms of picture quality, there's little to distinguish the camera from other 10 megapixel competitors so the only thing that should really affect a buying decision is the usability factor. On this count, it comes out pretty well too. Price-wise it...

Pentax Optio A20

A new race has begun in the digital camera marketplace. Manufacturers are now rushing to include elaborate systems that promise to reduce the effect of camera shake to their latest models. This doesn't mean the long established quest for more pixels is...

High resolution.; Effective camera shake reduction system.; Great colour reproduction

Macro mode doesn't get particularly close

Whether you're willing to tolerate hefty shooting and interminable processing delays will depend on how highly you value the A20's gorgeous colours, fine detail and low noise. The competent anti-shake and manual shooting features might help you make up...

Pentax Optio A20

If you're new to digital photography you may wish to read the DigitalPhotography Glossary before diving into this article (it may helpyou understand some of the terms used).

Good resolution, natural accurate color, subtle processing ; Subtle noise reduction holds onto detail higher up the ISO scale ; Excellent all-metal construction ; Good white balance ; Good flash performance ; Very compact ; Shake Reduction ; Useful...

Slow focus ; Fairly high shutter lag ; Slow flash recycling ; Shake Reduction not as reliable as some competitors ; Noise visible even at ISO 64, especially in low light, very noisy at higher ISOs (see above, however) ; Images a little soft - and not...

To quote from my own review of the A10, 'As someone who first got hooked on photography with a 30 year old Pentax and who has had a soft spot for the brand ever since, I just hope the next generation of Optio can build on the A10's undoubted strengths,...

Pentax Optio A20 Review

As is the nature of this business the Option A20 replaced the A10 only seven months after that model had been announced (and is itself about to be replaced by the further upgraded A30). The |A10 was one of the disappointments of last year, offering...
