Sigma DP1

The first compact digital camera with a DSLR-sized sensor has been widely anticipated, but how does it fare?

Sigma DP1 digital camera

From the outset, the Sigma DP1 was going to be a headline grabber as it held out the promise of DSLR image quality in a pocketable package and all this from a relatively small camera manufacturer best known for it's lens making. And so, the Sigma DP1...

Image quality, build, RAW shooting

Price, performance, handling, menus

And so, the Sigma DP1 is a bit of a mixed bag. Thought of as a quality compact digital camera, the image quality is streets ahead of any of compact with a "normal" sensor and competes well with DSLR image quality and so makes it a realistic back up,...

Sigma DP1 review

Possibly the most anticipated camera in the world… ever! The DP1 is finally here

Fantastic lens ; Solid build ; Great pictures

Sluggish operation ; Limited features ; Expensive

Sigma has taken a bold step in producing the DP1. Even when things proved difficult, the company soldiered on and produced a compact that people will look back on in years to come as being highly significant turning point in compact camera design.

Sigma DP1 review

Sigma's DP1 is unusual for a digital compact camera, in that it has an APS-C-size sensor, as found in many digital SLRs.

There are countless uses for a camera of the DP1's capabilities. The ultra-portable Sigma DP1 would make a superb choice for travel photographers. It would be fair to say Sigma's DP1 is the digital compact camera equivalent to Canon's full-frame EOS...

Best Prestige Camera: Sigma DP1

The Sigma DP1 is the first compact camera with a large sensor, and the one it uses is the same size as that found in the Sigma SD14. The Foveon technology employed gives very high quality images in RAW format at ISO ratings up to 200, though the...

Sigma DP1 review

Sigma's DP1 is unusual for a digital compact camera, in that it has an APS-C-size sensor, as found in many digital SLRs. Sigma has done an excellent job in keeping the DP1's wide-angle 28mm equivalent lens small, but there's a price to pay.

Large DSLR-like APS-C size Foveon sensor and high-quality 28mm f/4 wide-angle lens; compact dimensions; excellent picture quality at lower ISOs

Noise levels higher than current crop of DSLRs; menu-driven operation for most features; poor battery life

Sigma DP1 Review

Sigma's potentially ground-breaking DP1 was first announced in 2006 and is the first “pocketable” compact to feature a large APS-C sized sensor. The DP1 is all about image quality potentially rivaling some DSLRs, but can it live up to the billing?

Image quality, build, RAW shooting

Performance, Handling, Price, Menus

Quite simply, the DP1 provides the best image quality of any compact I’ve yet tested. But the price, overall handling and performance mean I suspect you’ll need to think long and hard to justify the outlay. However, a quick look over your images and...

Sigma DP1

Anyone looking for a high-quality digital compact camera is spoilt for choice these days. One of the more esoteric is Sigma's DP1. Although it has the same APS-C format sensor as the Sigma SD14, it's the small size of the lens that's the real marvel

While the DP1 can't match the versatility of a compact like the Canon PowerShot G9, the DP1 easily impresses, with its picture quality and portability. It may be pricey, but it's an ideal camera for landscapes and holiday snaps
