How does the unique Foveon X3 sensor measure up to the competition?

Feb, 2011

Expert review by : Doug Harman (pocket-lint.com)

Sigma SD14 DSLR camera

The SD14 updates Sigma's SD10 D-SLR and like its forbear, the SD14 eschews “normal” CCD or CMOS sensor technology using Foveon's X3 sensor. This uses pixel encapsulated in layers in the silicon that allows each layer of pixels to capture only one of...

Low ISO image quality, Colour rendition, Ease of use, RAW image quality

Performance, Hi-ISO image quality, Hi-ISO colour skew, Chunky design, Misleading resolution, AF foibles, JPEG compression/interpolation issues, Lack of sharpness in “SuperHi” (interpolated) resolution mode

Sigma SD14 review

Foveon - a technology we may be hearing a lot more from

Image quality can be astounding

Unsophisticated handling ; Clumsy colour control ; Noise at higher ISO settings

It's a long way from perfect, but if all it does is to bring Foveon technology a step closer to mainstream use, then it should be applauded for that

The results from the Foveon chip are certainly different, but those of the much cheaper Nikon D80 are more pleasing to the eye straight out of the Sigma SD14.

Sigma SD14 Review

Digital SLR Photography editor, Dan Lezano, test the Sigma SD14 14-megapixel DSLR camera

The Foveon X3 sensor differs from other image sensors in that every pixel captures red, green and red light. With other sensors, each pixel site only captures one of the three colours. This is shown on the illustration below. The SD14’s sensor records...
