Sony Cyber Shot P review: Sony Cyber Shot P

Compact and portable; solid mix of snapshooting basic and manual features; accepts accessory lenses; captures 30fps VGA movies.

Manual aperture limited to two settings; tiny screen with tinier icons and text; weak photo quality.

This snapshot camera delivers a bit more than the basics but offers merely adequate photo quality.

Solidly built and compact, the Cyber-shot DSC-P72 is a point-and-shoot for the mainstream--modestly priced and relatively easy to use, with all the features you need for casual photography.

Digital Cameras - Sony Cybershot DSC-P72 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

I've consistently been a fan of Sony's Cyber-shot line of digicams, and regarded the previous DSC-P71 a good "midrange" option for point-and-shoot digital photography. The DSC-P72 proves just as capable, if not more so with its extended preset Scene...

The DSC-P72 is equipped with a 3x, 6-18mm lens, equivalent to a 39-117mm lens on a 35mm camera. This is a fairly typical range, slightly biased toward the telephoto end relative to the more common 35-105mm range found on many 3x zoom-equipped cameras....

Its images aren't exactly top-notch, but its attractive price and its solid feature set are sure to please mainstream shooters.

TheSony Cyber-shot DSC-P72 ($330) is an updated version of the popularDSC-P71 from last year (seeour review). You get a refined, smaller body, new MPEG MovieVX mode, support for Memory Stick Pro cards and USB 2.0, soundrecording, and more.

Very good photo quality, Small, well-designed, easy to pocket camera, Impressive battery life, especially with bundled batteries, First rate movie mode, AF illuminator, Robust operation, Support for high capacity Memory Stick Pro cards, Supports add-on...

No manual white balance or shutter speed controls, 6 hour battery charger still a little slow, Reds a little too saturated

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P72

Handy, compact fits in top shirt pocket Uses standard AA batteries Can be used with adaptor to accept later Cards with much more RAM Easy to use from scratch without reference to instructions

Software does not work with Windows 7 - really bad news Not so good with moving objects - Delays between taking photo and capturing image means sometimes it is either blurred or too early/late Zoom steps a bit coarse
