Sony Cyber-shot RX1 hands-on

We go hands-on with Sony's all-new, ultra-premium full-frame 24.3MP compact.

Small and beautifully made ; Full-frame flexibility in a small package ; Roughly half the price of a Leica M9

Still too big for all but the deepest of pockets ; 2,800 is hardly cheap for a compact

The Sony Cyber-shot RX1 is undoubtedly an exciting – if not particularly cheap – addition to the Sony range that will take the company into the same ultra-premium compact camera territory that Leica has made its own over the years. Without being able...

The world's first point-and-shoot with a full-frame sensor

An exceptional point-and-shoot but a full-frame DSLR offers more flexibility

Sony Cyber-shot RX1 review

The Cyber-shot RX1 is visually similar to the Sony Cyber-shot RX100, but it couldn't be more different inside. Where the RX100 has a thumbnail-sized sensor and collapsing zoom lens, the RX1 has a full-frame, 36x24mm sensor #&8212; that's the same size...

Sony’s attempt at a fixed-lens, compact-style camera in the RX1 is an excellent one. It’s well on the way to being one of the best cameras we’ve tested in terms of image quality, and has a control scheme that’s easy to understand and use manually....

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 review

Taking price out of the equation, one cannot fail to be impressed with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1. Fitting a full-frame sensor in such a small camera is an achievement, but making it easy to handle and giving it such a high-quality finish is even more...

Sony RX1 Full-Frame Compact: Why It Must Succeed

Full Frame of Mind

Near-breathless anticipation is pretty much how you'd describe the mood when Sony announced plans for what, on paper, looked to be the most advanced compact camera ever . So magnificently crafted is the RX1, a pro-level shooter with a full-frame sensor...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 review

Is the full-frame Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 a great camera? Sure it is. But that's almost beside the point; at about $2,800, the real question becomes, "Is it $1,500 better than its APS-C competitors"? Despite the squirming of my inner budgeteer, I have...

Great photo and good video quality in a camera with a nicely functional and fluid shooting design are the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 's highlights.

It lacks a viewfinder, autofocus is sluggish, and there's no focus peaking in video mode.

With a terrific lens and a great full-frame sensor, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 delivers the best photos we've seen from a fixed-lens camera. But that doesn't come cheap.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 is the smallest full-frame camera you can get, and while it pumps out gorgeous images, its price is likely to induce sticker shock.

Full-frame image sensor. Extremely sharp lens. Excellent high ISO performance. Fast burst shooting. Short shutter lag. Fast f/2 aperture. 1080p60 video capture. Top-notch control layout.

Expensive, and accessories are very pricey. No zoom capability. Slow to start and shoot. Lens shows some barrel distortion. No built-in viewfinder. External battery charger not included.

If you find the prices of the EVF, OVF, and thumb grip shocking, you're not alone. Many have knocked the RX1 for the price of its accessories, and for not including some very basic ones in the box. Sony opted not to include a battery charger; instead,...

Sony RX1 review: shooting like a pro with a pocket-sized camera

It's hard to shoot pictures in the dark. You typically have the choice of either taking a blurry, dim photo, or using a flash and ruining the ambiance. So you buy a DSLR and an appropriately bright...

Amazing image quality ; Compact, sturdy build quality ; Lots of manual contols

Expensive with expensive accessories ; Poor battery life ; Inconsistent, slow autofocus ; No ability to zoom or change lenses

The RX1 is a photographer's camera — a really wealthy photographer's camera

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1

We were surprised (and delighted) when Sony decided to create the RX100 - its first compact camera for serious photographers, but that's nothing compared to our surprise when we were told about the RX1. This isn't just Sony's most serious compact...

Excellent image quality in both JPEG and Raw ; Full frame in a compact, well-built body ; Dedicated aperture and exposure compensation controls ; Exceptional build-quality - solid feeling without being too heavy ; Superb high ISO output in both JPEG...

Autofocus speed not fast enough for moving subjects ; Autofocus struggles in low light ; Significant vignetting (as with similar lenses), corrections 'baked into' Raw files ; Multiple button presses required to move AF point ; No built-in viewfinder...

The RX1 is a small camera capable of astonishing image quality. Its handling marries classic camera ergonomics with a couple of cyber-shot quirks but it's still a lovely camera to shoot with. If a fixed 35mm lens will fulfill any of your shooting...
