Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W100 review

As the current top-of-the-line model in its Cyber Shot W series, Sony's Cyber Shot DSC-W100 shares almost everything with its siblings, the DSC-W70 , the DSC-W50 , and the DSC-W30 : it uses the same ultracompact 6.7-ounce body , 38mm-to-114mm 3X zoom...

Acceptable snapshots; compact; easy to use; decent performance; better-than-average movie quality.

Beyond ISO 80, photos look soft and smeary due to processing artifacts and noise.

The Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W100 is a decent snapshot camera, but better choices are out there.

Sony DSC W100

Just a bit bigger than pocket sized the Sony DSC W100 offers eight megapixels, a three times optical zoom lens and also some basic manual exposure features.

Viewfinder ; Ease of use ; Manual exposure mode

Red eye

The Sony DSC W100 is a powerful eight megapixel digital camera in a pleasantly compact body. It is one of the few cameras of its type to offer manual exposure controls. It remains easy to use and takes a good picture too.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W100

Sharp colourful pictures, Great ISO performance even a ISO 1250

Poor burst mode, Higher than normal chromatic aberration

The DSC-W100 takes brilliant pictures and offers decent functionality. It is only really let down by a weak burst mode.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W100

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W100 is a decent 8-megapixel ultracompact, but its low-light performance is underwhelming.

Sharp, crisp images. Very good performance. Almost no shutter lag.

A bit expensive. LCD solarizes easily. Problems with low-light function.

Cybershot DSC-W100 Digital Camera

The $350 (as of 6/15/06) Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W100 is a solidly built, metal-bodied camera that features an optical viewfinder in addition to a 2.5-inch color LCD. It's not loaded with exotic features, but it boasts high sensitivity to light, with an...

Wide-screen shooting mode High ISO setting (1250)

No aperture- or shutter-priority mode Few scene modes (6)

One of the W100's resolution settings lets you store photos with a 16:9 aspect ratio. At 1920-by-1080 pixels, the images are only 2 megapixels, but that's perfect for displaying on an HDTV. However, you can't simply hook up the camera to an HDTV via...
