Sony PlayStation Portable

To coincide with the European launch of the PSP, we've updated and republished our original review.

Sony has redefined mobile gaming with the PlayStation Portable. I never imagined that the PSP would be this good, and this is one product that has to be seen to be believed. When Sony released the original PlayStation, the balance of power in console...

Sony PSP review

The Sony PlayStation Portable comes with its own UMD movie format, has a 4.3in colour screen and a pile of freebie online content

Movie and photo transfer capability, MP3 playback, bearable speakers… this is the best portable gaming machine ever

Sony PSP review

Sony's successful failure is still a decent video player

Can be found for a good price ; Good potential image quality ; Easy to use

Proprietary formats ; New UMDs overpriced and limited

A fine player, but needs removable media

Movie playback is often considered a secondary function to gaming for Sony's handheld console, but its oft-revered screen was specifically chosen for its video ability.

Sony PSP

It's small, black, sleek and oozes quality. The Sony PSP has finally reached our shores and has to be seen to be believed.

Like the iPod, this has the potential to be the next 'must-have' piece of kit.

Sony PlayStation Portable

The Sony PSP revolutionised the world of mobile entertainment with cutting edge gaming, DVD quality movies, photo viewer, music player and Wi-Fi Internet access. All this served up in one of the sexiest gadgets ever designed ? for kids young and old,...

The first thing you notice about the PSP is that almost offensively impressive 4.3-inch widescreen. Turned off it?s enough to make you gasp in awe at its size and outright shininess, but flick the power switch and the quality of image that greets you...

Sony PSP (model 2000)

Sony's new and enhanced PSP (model 2000) is the company's greatest handheld game machine yet.

Sleeker and lighter than the original. A/V output. Raised D-pad offers increased tactile feedback. Additional RAM makes load times faster. Displays photos. Plays video and music files. Built-in Wi-Fi and Web-browsing capabilities. Stunning widescreen...

Unfortunate power button location is unchanged from the original. A/V output lacks gaming support for interlaced-only TV sets. USB charging alternative is inconvenient. UMD load times are still an issue. Screen smudges easily.

another disappointment was the lack of gaming support for interlaced-only tv sets. although video files, movies, and pictures can be displayed in 480i, a message pops up stating that gaming requires the use of progressive scan, rendering sets without...

Sony PSP

Those in the target demographic have eagerly awaited its arrival. And even people other than 15- to- 25-year-old males may have more than a passing interest in one of the year's most anticipated pieces of gadgetry: the Sony PSP. Originally conceived as...

Portable multimedia and gaming device that is well designed and easy to use. The 4.3-inch widescreen TFT LCD is simply beautiful. Built-in Wi-Fi for playing games against friends (or enemies).

Sony continues to rely on proprietary technology such as the Universal Media Disk (UMD) and the Memory Stick Duo format. System volume doesn't get loud enough. Lacks features found on dedicated music/video players.

The PSP is an elegant portable device that excels at playing games and is a good music player, video player, and photo viewer. Regrettably, Sony continues to rely on propriety removable media formats to deliver the content.
