Etymotic ER4PT

The Etymotic ER4PT are top-end earphones costing around £250. They've been around for a while, but having not checked out an Etymotic top model since 2006, I thought it was time for a look at what the company is offering today.

Detailed, spacious sound ; Good isolation

Fairly low sub-bass impact ; Fiddly fit

Elegant-sounding earphones for those willing to trade power for precision.

Etymotic Research ER.4 microPro Headphones

A good set of headphones can make all the difference, but how much are you willing to spend?

On a more positive note, the cable is not only very long, but also coated in thick and strong black PVC, giving it an almost industrial look. There’s also a cable clip in the box, so you can make sure that you don’t snag the long cable on anything and...

Etymotic ER4 Earphones review

Precision in-ears for cutting-edge sound

Incredible precision ; Reference standard ; True neutral sound

Not very comfortable ; Sibilant with some sources

Strong performers, the Etymotic ER4 are reference-grade in-ears for folks who want the best sound quality on the planet. That said, casual listeners and budding earbud enthusiasts likely won't like the steep price, deep in-ear design and constant...

Etymotic ER-4P review

Making the science of sound work for you

Good sound reduction ; Interesting design ; Good level of detail

Fit may not suit all ; Bass not as strong as expected

Be prepared to spend some time fiddling with earpieces and angles of approach - you will eventually be repaid with superdetailed sound

Etymotic ER-6ic review

Custom-fit earphones are no longer just for musicians

ACS’s custom-fitting mould service ; Unrivalled noise cancelling ; Perfect fit ; Comfortable

Tthe ER-6i is sadly the weak link here ; Poor bass ; Overall sound is on the thin side ; Noise cancelling is almost too good!

The ER-6ic has plenty to offer and whilst not strictly hi-fi, the advantages of custom fitting outweigh the limitations in sound quality. But be warned, the noise cancelling is so good you might not hear your keys falling from your pocket into the street.

Etymotic ER-4PT MicroPro review

First, a bit of clarification. In case you didn't realize it, Etymotic has four versions of its ER-4 MicroPro series earphones, each of which retail for $299. According to the company, here's how the differences break down:

The Etymotic MicroPro ER-4PTs are accurate, well-balanced in-ear headphones. Their treble clarity and precision let you hear details in the recording, and they exhibit a richer and more satisfying balance in bass and midrange than the Etymotic HF5s....

The thick plastic around the ER-4PTs' plug may restrict access to some smartphones or audio devices housed in cases. If you like a lot of bass, the ER-4PTs will come up a little short. Complete sonic isolation and some cord-related vibrations can also...

While the Etymotic ER-4PTs have less low-end oomph than some competing earphones in this price class, they deliver excellent sound with very accurate tonal balance.

Etymotic ER-4PT review: Clarity, redefined

The Etymotic ER-4PT is one hell of a pair of headphones – oozing detail, attack and balance, but not a huge amount of bass

The ER-4PTs are truly great in-ear headphones, capable of reproducing an extraordinary amount of detail. They’re unrelentingly revealing, aggressively detailed, highly musical and accurate to a tee, but they’re not for everyone.

Etymotic ER4 SR

The Etymotic ER4 SR headphones provide an accurate, unrivaled critical listening experience.

Exceptional audio performance with supreme clarity and accuracy. Several secure eartip options. Nice array of accessories, including headphone jack adapter, replacement filters, and carrying case. Detachable cable.

Not for those seeking bass-forward sound signature. No replacement cable included.

Musicians, composers, and sound engineers can feel confident in the accuracy of the ER4 SR as a reference tool. Music lovers in search of flat response-style earphones to get a truer sense of the engineer's intentions will also enjoy the exceptional...

Etymotic ER-4PT

The ER-4PT, the latest in Etymotic's ER series, is perhaps the most accurate flat response pair or earphones you can buy, and it's worth every penny.

High-quality flat-response earphones with accurate bass. Secure fit. Low-profile, lightweight design. Superb ear-to-ear stereo image accuracy. Comes with carrying case and plenty of accessories.

Not for deep bass lovers.
