Model changes at the upper end of Sennheiser's headphone line don't happen very often. The previous flagship--the still available HD 650s --were introduced in 2003, and remain in the line. Their predecessor, the HD 600s , came out more than a decade...

Top-notch engineering and build quality; highly accurate sound; super comfy over-the-ear design; detachable headphone cable.

Extremely expensive; not the best match for an iPod; no included adapter for 3.5mm minijacks.

Sennheiser's exquisite HD 800s sound more like listening to full-size speakers than any other headphones we've heard to date.

Incredible price, require amplification

Despite the price we were very impressed with the Sennheiser HD 800 headphones. They consistently handled every bass and treble note we threw at them, and the build quality is exceptional.
