Dell Studio 14z

Editor's note: This laptop is a special fixed-configuration model offered only at the Best Buy retail chain.

Crisp, vivid screen ; Discrete nVidia GPU squeezed inside

No built-in flash media slots ; Pricy external optical drive

The sleek, slim 14z all-purpose laptop delivers a great package overall--so long as you don't crave an optical drive.

Dell Inspiron E1705 (Vista)

The Dell Inspiron E1705 is a good choice for an affordable desktop replacement laptop. With Vista Home Premium, the choice is that much clearer.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Experience. Various graphics and screen options. Good battery life for a desktop replacement. Ample USB ports.

Not a good gaming machine. Design getting old. External tuner and remote.

Dell Studio 14z

This slim 14-inch notebook offers strong performance and long battery life, but you'll sacrifice an optical drive.

If you can live without an optical drive (and we suspect many of you can) and a dedicated memory card reader, the Dell Studio 14z has lots to offer: an attractive design, powerful speakers, good endurance, and strong performance, including Nvidia 9400M...

Dell Studio 14z Review

The notebook chassis is constructed from a combination of plastics and magnesium alloy for a balance of light weight and durability, and I have no doubt the Studio 14z can survive several years of use and abuse by college students, although I'd feel...

Attractive design ; Good overall performance for the price ; Great screen and speakers

No optical drive ; No standard VGA port ; No standard SD card slot

Noise levels are fairly quiet when running on battery as the fan produces a constant weak "hum" as hot air is pushed out. The fan gets louder when the laptop is set to the "high performance" power profile under Microsoft Vista and was plugged into the...
