HP 255 G3

This is HP's entry-level business laptop featuring open-source OS Ubuntu instead of the traditional Windows. Overseen by UK-based Canonical, Ubuntu is regarded as the most secure operating system around, and is slowly but surely gathering traction in...

Low cost ; Rugged design ; DVD drive ; Ubuntu has potential

Terrible screen ; Poor battery life ; Lack of compatible apps

Lacking in processing muscle and boasting only a functional rather than eye-catching design, the HP 255 G3 nevertheless represents decent value for money – and serves as a neat introduction to the promising Ubuntu OS.

A trustworthy and sturdy laptop

Good value for money ; Relatively impressive performance levels ; Solid design ; It has an optical drive

Poor battery life ; 10/100 Mbps Ethernet

The HP 255 G3 laptop is a bland-looking notebook with a fairly impressive feature set. It's affordable, doesn't look cheap, and does what it's meant to do.

HP 255 G3 budget laptop review

To help achieve the low price, HP has installed Microsoft's new complimentary edition of Windows 8.1 with Bing. Without having to pay for Windows, HP was able to focus on just getting the budget components together to make a working laptop. We borrowed...

Design and build quality of the HP 255 G3 are workmanlike, but importantly the main comfort areas of keyboard, trackpad and display are quite usable, if with the usual issues of poor display quality we find at this low price. But for only £200 the HP...

Excellent value

I changed the hard drive for an SSD on arrival, not an easy job as you have to go through the top, there are no removable covers on the bottom. Found vid on Youtube to follow strip and rebuild

very good value for money (especially if you can claim additional £30)

old Ubuntu installed, an update option does not work. I had to overwrite system by newest version from DVD but that’s very minor. Overall very happy, very good value for money (especially if you can claim additional £30)

Good performance for price

Keyboard and keypad feel a bit loose, didn't like dealing with Ubuntu but that situation was quickly corrected.

Yes an easier way of getting my cash back, can't send an invoice to HP and no one has replied to my emails

I'm using it with both Ubuntu 15.10 and Windows 10. It is fine for general use including web, e-mail, Office/Libreoffice. Great value for money with the £30 cash back offer.

The keyboard is a bit flimsy at the edges, moving when you press the keys.

Good price point Average performance but at right level for price Sturdy enough

The HP cash back deals are a pain in the rear. You have to remember to apply 30 days after purchase and no later than 60 days so it's designed for you to fail
