Hands-on: Asus packs optical zoom in its new smartphone

All told, we’re really looking forward to giving the ZenFone Zoom a proper test run closer to its release date later this year. If that camera holds up it could be a real contender especially as Asus is planning to charge only $399 for it.

What's a ZenFone 2 with a better camera worth to you?

Slick design ; Thoughtful button placement ; Some neat ZenUI features ; Slight reduction of photo noise

Squishy button action ; Questionable value ; Subpar screen ; ZenUI hurts more than helps ; Camera doesn't rock the boat

Asus adds svelte styling and a 3x optical zoom snapper to the ZenFone 2. While the new traits are welcomed, neither makes a convincing enough argument to make this your next phone.

The Asus ZenFone Zoom is the first phone with an optical zoom lens that doesn't protrude out of the phone, a mighty impressive accomplishment. But don't start tossing money at Asus just yet. The phone's spammy software and slow camera drag it down too...

Asus' ZenFone Zoom breaks new ground with a built-in optical zoom camera that doesn't stick out or appear to move. Photos taken are generally great, but worse in low light.

The phone software peppers you with ads by default. Camera performance feels sluggish.

At $399 (which is around £275 or AU$560), the Zoom isn't cheap -- you're paying the early adopter tax to get your hands on it. If you're looking at alternative phones with great cameras, then your best bet would still be flagships such as the Samsung...

The Asus ZenFone Zoom is a camera-centric unlocked phone with a 3x optical zoom lens, but it's held back by average sensor quality, a slow camera app, and a lack of 4K video recording.

3x optical zoom. Manual camera controls. Premium build.

Sluggish camera app. No 4K video. Unimpressive battery life. Dated UI with heavy skin and lots of bloatware.

Software and Conclusions The Zoom ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop , which is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth now that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is showing up on more devices . Asus has confirmed that the ZenFone 2 line will get Marshmallow....
